The Blood of Dawnwalker came out last week with huge expectations and generally lived up to them. The dark, open-world fantasy RPG adventure led by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz of The Witcher 3 fame has received “mostly positive” reviews on Steam and mostly high marks from the press.
The most telling thing is that the audience for the studio’s debut game Rebel Wolves is almost half made up of the same people who played CD Projekt RED titles. Analyst Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics reported that The Witcher 3 was the “premium” game with the maximum audience crossover.
According to Alinea Analytics, 58% of The Blood of Dawnwalker players on Steam have previously launched The Witcher 3. The figure is especially noteworthy because this crossover was formed just a few days after release.
The connection between the two games is explained by the composition of the team. Rebel Wolves was founded by people from CD Projekt RED, including Tomaszkiewicz himself, who held the position of game director of The Witcher 3. Data shows that some fans follow specific developers, and not just the studio brand.
The influence of The Witcher 3 is evident in the game’s structure, from its grimdark setting and branching narrative to its fast-paced fencing combat and deep role-playing systems. The mechanics of time as a resource are highlighted separately, where each action in the main line of tasks consumes a limited supply of days and nights.
At the same time The Blood of Dawnwalker has not yet achieved the level of universal acclaim that The Witcher 3 had. The game has room to grow its reputation as players delve deeper into its world, and Rebel Wolves plans to turn the story into a whole “saga” with sequels.
