Power armor in Fallout 4 presented as the pinnacle of pre-war engineering: nuclear units, servos, separate landing animation. But the most reliable shield of the Commonwealth turned out to be a rusty supermarket trolley, which you can pick up with your bare hands and drag in front of you like a Roman scutum.

The video where the hero, wearing only a Vault jumpsuit, shields himself from raider bullets with a cart, reminded us of a mechanic that many would learn about the existence of after hundreds of hours. Long pressing the interact button allows you to grab almost any physics object, and while it’s in your hands, it’s handled fairly by the physics engine. Bullets and melee hits hit the object, not the character.

Size is everything. The trolley covers almost the entire silhouette, the trash can lid acts as a compact buckler, and the office trash can is only suitable for covering the legs. The tactics are simple: hold the shield while the enemy empties the magazine, and while reloading, throw it in the opponent’s face (holding the reload button is responsible for the throw) and go into VATS.

This mechanic has a separate life in Fallout 4 VRwhere the object is held in the left hand and the weapon in the right. Unlike the regular version, the barrel can be brought out from behind the edge of the cover at an angle, and random debris in the location suddenly turns into a tactical resource. One of the players noticed that after this you begin to look around the room not in search of loot, but in search of a suitable lid.

The second use of the collected trash is even more absurd. If you stand with your back to the wall, pick up a trash can, look down and continue to back away, the character begins to literally crawl up the vertical surface, turning the trash can into a pocket elevator.

And the neatest trick involves AI. In the final for the Institute, where they need to cover the synths near Liberty Prime, the Brotherhood of Steel soldiers are required to climb the stairs on both sides of the platform, and if they drag a couple of carts from the nearest beach there in advance, the navigation grid breaks down: the soldiers will not push the obstacle and will wind in circles below under fire.

The T-60 armor set requires nuclear units, a workshop and half of the Commonwealth resources, and the cart is free at the entrance to any looted store.
