Developer Justin Schroeder showed an unusual way to give feedback to an AI agent while working on video card drivers. The laptop is directed with a webcam at the mirror and thus watches its own screen in real time.

According to Schroeder, the MacBook uses a webcam to mirror its screen and improve Omarchy’s support for AMD Radeon chips. We are talking about a Linux distribution, which is positioned as a system created “for the era of agents.”

The scheme works like this: the coding agent makes changes to the driver, and then evaluates the result not from the logs, but from the image from the camera. This allows you to notice image artifacts, composer freezes or incorrect output, which are not always recorded in text reports.

Since the laptop is working on finalizing Radeon support for itself, we are almost certainly talking about an old MacBook with an Intel processor and AMD graphics. These are the machines Apple produced before switching to its own chips, and it is for them that the support situation in Linux remains patchy.

The experiment was noticed by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who joked that what was happening reminded him of HAL 9000 reading lips. The supercomputer in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey actually figured out the astronauts’ plans by watching them talk through a window.

Omarchy itself relies on quick installation and built-in agents that can independently diagnose system problems. The authors of the distribution promise that the user will be able to “vibcode” any change, setting or problem without diving into configuration files manually.

The distribution is not limited to vintage Intel Macs. The developers claim compatibility with several classes of machines at once:

  • Mac on Apple Silicon chips

  • modern x86 PCs

  • weak laptops like the 2011 ThinkPad X220 with 2 GB of RAM

Source code and documentation are available in the repository at GitHub. For owners of old Intel Macs, Omarchy is interesting because of its set of specialized drivers and ready-made configurations, which usually have to be assembled manually.
