The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of secrets, magic, secret passages and attempts to find them. In the old fairytale tradition, sometimes you just need to say the right words. The problem is that if you say the wrong thing, the consequences can be extremely dire.
In this guide, we’ll explain how to enter the lair of the necromancer Ilin Thoth through the Ornamented Mirror, which will give you access to the forbidden grimoire “Necromancy of Thay”, which, despite its ominous name, can be very useful in your further travels, if, of course, you will be able to read it.
Where is Ilin Toth’s lair?
This secret place is located under the apothecary’s house in the Extinct Village. To find it, head south from the waypoint to the dilapidated building located at coordinates (X:32 Y:380). On the floor behind the counter you will find a wooden hatch.
Going downstairs, you will find yourself in a laboratory where you will find several elixirs, diaries and other things that you would expect to see in a pharmacist’s house. However, behind the boxes on the wall where the painting hangs, there is a hidden lever that opens the way to a new location.
Where is the Decorated Mirror and how to get through it
Next you will find yourself either in a cave, or in some kind of crypt. It’s better not to touch anything here if you don’t want to wake up the dead, and just go to the point indicated in the screenshot – there you will find the Decorated Mirror.
This magic mirror is intelligent and will require you to prove that you are allowed to be here. If you answer incorrectly, the mirror will summon a dark sphere that will cause massive damage to you. To prevent this from happening, you should say your real name and choose the following dialogue options:
- Yes, I’m an ally! Your master’s ally.
- Shaas Tam is a scoundrel and a scoundrel.
- I read the doctor’s diary: he used balsam to clean the wound.
- Any spell that will get rid of this worm in my head.
If done correctly, the mirror will grant you access to the final room in this area, allowing you to obtain a powerful dark artifact – the Necromancy of Thay.
“Necromancy of Thay”
This is a kind of local analogue of the “Necronomicon” – that is, the book of the dead, which will give you access to forbidden magic or unleash ancient evil, or even kill you. It’s unlikely that something harmless is written in a book made of human skin, right?
In any case, you won’t be able to open and read it properly, and to do this you will need to go in search of the key in a cave under the nearest well, which is teeming with giant spiders, which will subsequently result in a separate long quest to decipher the contents of the book, which will only end in the next act. On the other hand, you have the opportunity not to tempt fate and get rid of this dangerous artifact by giving it to Gale to be “eaten”, or simply destroying it. So, we’ll leave the choice to you.
