During your journey in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will often find objects that definitely carry some kind of sacred value unknown to you. Therefore, even if you have no idea about the use of the mysterious artifacts found, we advise you not to get rid of them, otherwise you may miss out on one of the best weapons in the game, which you can assemble with your own hands.
The Mournful Chill is a unique staff that was once split into three pieces that you can combine together to gain a tactical advantage in battle. With its help, you can inflict additional cold damage on enemies, inflict the Chill effect on them, and replenish your arsenal of magical attacks with a new useful spell. Find out where to find all the necessary components and how to assemble this powerful weapon.
Where to find Ice Hilt, Ice Metal and Ice Crystal
To create the Mournful Chill, you must collect and combine three specific parts that are scattered throughout the Underdark.
If you got here through the Broken Sanctum in the camp, you can immediately get Ice hilt, but for this you will need to fight one of the most difficult bosses of the first act – the Observer. Fortunately, we have a special guide that will help you with this.
After the battle, you will find the hilt with a drow named Dhorn, who can either die or survive by siding with you. In the second case, you can attack him again, or try to steal (you can find out how to do this in our other guide).
The battle site is located near the Selunite Outpost travel point.
Ice metal is a trophy that can be found on a drow’s body in the myconid colony vault. You will gain access there only after you have dealt with the Dvergar on the orders of Lord Spava on the shore south of the colony. Get ready, this will be a difficult battle with a whole enemy squad, many of which can become invisible. We advise you to immediately take a position on a hill in order to throw your opponents down every time they try to get closer.
Ice crystal It’s easiest to find, since its owner will most likely attack you himself near the Sussur Tree in the western side of the Underdark. This will be a drow named Filro the Forgotten. Defeating him is not difficult, which cannot be said about his pet, the Hooked Horror, but if you have already dealt with the Observer, then you should not experience any difficulties here.
How to assemble the “Sorrowful Chill” staff
Once you’ve collected all the ice pieces, all you have to do is put them together, and this is uncharacteristically easy for a game as intricate as Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s hard to believe, but you don’t have to look for a special blacksmith in a secret location on the other side of the map . Simply right-click on one of the items in your inventory and click “Combine”. Next, drag all three components into the empty slots and confirm the merge. Ready!
Characteristics of the staff “Sorrowful Chill”
This is, in fact, what you tried for:
- “Icy Heart” effect: when dealing cold damage, deals an additional +1 damage to enemies.
- Insidious Cold Effect: Dealing cold damage with a spell has the potential to chill the target.
- Weapon Upgrade: +1 to attack rolls, +1 damage.
- “Ice Beam” evocation focus that does not require recharging.
- This weapon also emits a light aura of 7.5 m, which will definitely come in handy during your further exploration of the dark corners of the Underdark.
That’s everything you need to know about crafting the Mournful Chill Staff. Remember the importance of its components and better allocate them a separate place in your inventory so as not to sell them by mistake.
