According to information BloombergSony Interactive Entertainment is in the early stages of developing a handheld console that will allow games to be played on the PlayStation 5. The new project could be a response to the growing popularity of handheld devices dominated by Nintendo, as well as a potential competitor to mobile hardware from Microsoft, which recently confirmed work on own prototypes.
The source notes that the device is at too early a stage to guarantee its release, and Sony may abandon the project. Interestingly, the PlayStation Portal, a portable device for remote play with the PlayStation 5 that has already exceeded Sony’s expectations, was originally intended to be a standalone console that does not require connection to the PS5.
There are no official comments from Sony Group Corporation at the moment. It is worth noting that these are not the first rumors about the development of a portable console from the company.
