Film adaptation of the Greek epic by Christopher Nolan came close to the status of the highest-grossing film in Universal studio history. “Odyssey” has already collected more than $1.6 billion worldwide, and the gap with the leader of the current rating is narrowing literally before our eyes.
Universal’s record holder is still Jurassic World with $1.67 billion. “Odyssey” has already reached the 1.63 billion mark, and given the pace, overtaking the leader looks like a matter of the near future, not the distant future.
These results do not appear to be an accident. Distributors extended screenings in the IMAX 70mm format due to the huge demand of viewers who wanted to see the film on film in the highest quality version, and not in digital format.
The plot of the film revolves around Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Standing in the way of the hero are a cyclops, a sea monster, a giant whirlpool, cannibal giants and a sorceress who turns men into pigs. At the same time, Odysseus’s wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, fights off suitors led by Antinous, played by Robert Pattinson, and the heroes’ son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, goes in search of news about his father.
“Odyssey“ overtook The Dark Knight Rises at the box office in its first weekend, setting a personal record for Nolan. In addition, the film became the highest-grossing R-rated release of all time, surpassing Deadpool and Wolverine.
