Dune: Spice Wars is a 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) strategy game based on the futuristic universe of Frank Herbert’s space saga. The game was developed by Shiro Games (Northgard). Spice Wars is planned to be released on its own engine, specifically designed for strategies. The closest competitors in the genre are Sid Meier’s Civilization and Humankind.
In Spice Wars, the player will enter into a military conflict for the planet Arrakis, where the most valuable resource in the universe is mined – “spice”.

The player is given several factions to choose from (four on release and a fifth after the end of early access), including the houses of Atreides and Harkonnen, under whose control the player will need to conquer the entire planet, destroying opponents, and gain control over the “pearl of space”. The stakes are so high that every possible method will have to be used, from espionage and intrigue to military expansion.

Among other things, the developers promise the presence in the game of procedural generation of maps with a large number of changeable parameters (including the strength of the wind and the activity of sandworms, which directly affect both the movement of troops and the production of “spice”), as well as real-time strategy elements (they will be implemented using time manipulation in the game). The new “Dune” will differ in style from its competitors – the designers have chosen an angular and simplified image style. According to the creators, the choice of this style was partly due to the landscape of Arrakis. The surface of the planet is almost entirely occupied by sand and stones, and their realistic image would tire the player’s eye and force all fields of action to merge into a single yellow-gray mass. Styling, on the other hand, allows you to diversify colors and shapes, making the environment both gloomy and boring.

The announcement of the game took place as part of The Game Awards in 2021, at which the developers announced that the strategy would be released in early access and at first it would be available only as part of a single player game. Multiplayer and campaign mode promise to add a little later. At the moment, it is known that the original source of the game is a book, however, elements of the 2021 film adaptation will also be partly implemented in it. Scheduled for release in 2022, Dune: Spice Wars will be the first Frank Herbert-inspired virtual entertainment game to come out in over 20 years.
