Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on October 26, 2004 for PlayStation 2 and June 7, 2005 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. The high definition remastered version received a physical release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 30, 2015 and December 1, 2015, respectively.

It is the seventh title in the Grand Theft Auto series and the first major entry since 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It was released on the same day as the Grand Theft Auto Advance handheld game for the Game Boy Advance. On June 8, 2018, the game was added to the Xbox One library with backwards compatibility.

Users play from a third-person perspective in an open-world setting, allowing the player to interact with the game world at their leisure. The game takes place in the fictional American state of San Andreas, which is loosely based on California and Nevada. The state of San Andreas consists of three capital cities: Los Santos, based in Los Angeles; San Fierro, based in San Francisco; and Las Venturas, based on Las Vegas.

The Single Player Story follows Carl “CJ” Johnson, a former gangster who returns home to Los Santos from Liberty City after murdering his mother. Carl finds his old friends and family in turmoil, and over the course of the game he tries to rebuild his old gang, clashes with corrupt police officers, and gradually unravels the truth behind his mother’s murder.

The story is based on numerous true events in Los Angeles, including the rivalry between the Bloods, Crips and Spanish street gangs, the crack epidemic of the 1980s, the LAPD Rampart scandal and the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
