RimWorld is a top-down construction and management simulation video game from Montreal-based developer Ludeon Studios. Originally called the Eclipse Colony, it was originally released as a Kickstarter early access crowdfunding project for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux in November 2013 and was officially released on October 17, 2018.

The futuristic plot originally revolved around three characters who found themselves in distress on a planet located on the borders of known space (“the world of the rim”), where their space liner crashed. The game is set in a universe where travel at speeds exceeding the speed of light, and faster-than-light communication are not yet possible, making large galactic empires inherently impossible.

The combat system and psychology of the characters are detailed: like the Dwarven Fortress, each Persian has his own personality, and the characters can have almost every part of his body damaged. During the customization of the game round, a random backstory, medical conditions, opportunities and certain traits of the characters are generated randomly.

If a RimWorld player doesn’t like one of their character’s attributes, they can keep generating new characters until they find a set of attributes they like. Initial characters can be renamed. Over time, more and more characters will join the colony.

They can either join of their own free will, or they can be captured and persuaded to join the colony. Like novice characters, they have a random set of traits generated by a slot machine.
The game can end when at least one character has left the planet in a spaceship or when they are all dead.
