Slime Rancher is a life simulation video game developed and published by American indie studio Monomi Park. The game was released as an Early Access game in January 2016, with an official release for Windows, macOS, Linux and Xbox One on August 1, 2017. The PlayStation 4 version was released on August 2018. As of February 28, 2019, the game has sold 2 million copies.

The gameplay introduces first-person exploration in an open world. The player controls a character named Beatrix Lebeau, a rancher who travels to a planet far from Earth called “Far Far Range” to live the life of a “slime ranch”, which consists of building his ranch and exploring the environment to collect, grow, feed and breed mucus – gelatinous living organisms of various sizes and characteristics.

The main economic aspect of the game is to feed the slimes with appropriate food to produce “spare parts” that can then be sold in exchange for Newbucks – the currency needed to buy upgrades for a rancher’s equipment or outbuildings. The user moves the character through different environments and can collect mucus, food and tailors by sucking them in with their vacuum tool (the so-called “Vacpack”, a portmanteau of vacuum and a backpack).

They can only store a limited number of items and item types at a time and must return to their ranch to unload the collected items before they can collect more. The participant must buy and upgrade various aviaries to accommodate their collected slimes and farms to store their food. Improvements can also be aesthetic in terms of the development of the house, the vacuum, and the character’s ranch itself.
