One of the main obstacles in the path of a novice fugitive from Tarkov is other, more experienced players. Thorough preparation will help to cope with this trouble, in which theory is almost more important than practice. Our new beginner’s guide focuses on the types of ammo in Escape from Tarkov that can affect a player’s success.

A distinctive feature of Escape from Tarkov is an advanced weapon system, which players spend a lot of time learning, because in addition to the variety of guns, the game has complex modification mechanics, as well as various types of ammunition that you have to deal with.

With the latter, things are far from being as simple as in other session shooters. Each type of ammo will cost money and affect how you play. Reasonable selection in this case is another mandatory part of the process of preparing for a raid, which cannot be neglected in any way.

Despite the fact that only a certain caliber is suitable for different types of weapons, even within it there is a choice. In most cases, more effective cartridges will cost players more, but if you are a beginner and just mastering aiming and other mechanics, overpaying for them is strictly not recommended.

In this guide, we’ll cover the ammo that works best for each type of weapon so you can get a general idea and choose something for yourself.

What determines the effectiveness of cartridges?

Ammunition in Tarkov may fit different firearms and have different names, but it all comes down to two key parameters that will be decisive when choosing a particular type:

penetrating power – a parameter that determines the intensity of damage that the cartridges inflict on the unprotected flesh of the enemy.

armor penetration – a parameter that determines the ability of the ammunition to overcome the protection of your opponent. Most experienced players prefer to raid with flak jackets and even helmets, which means that you will need ammo that can definitely penetrate both.

The difficulty lies in finding the perfect balance between the first and second parameters. It’s unlikely that you will change the horn every time as soon as you pierced the enemy’s armor in order to finish him off with maximum flesh damage, so it’s important to prioritize correctly.

Best ammo in Escape from Tarkov

In summary, the best ammo in our case will not be those cartridges that have the highest penetration or flesh damage rating, but those that have both of these parameters, as well as the price, are most intelligently balanced.

Here is a list of our favourites:

  • 12 gauge – 12/70 flechette. Has a penetration of 28 and damage to armor 26. The best choice for suitable shotguns and carbines.
  • 20 caliber – 20/70 6.2 buckshot. Has the best balance between 13 penetration and 2 penetrating power.
  • 9x18mm PM PMM. Properly balanced ammo for a number of pistols and SMGs with 33 armor penetration and 24 flesh damage.
  • 7.62x25mm Pst gzh. The best option for TT and PPSH-41 with penetration 36 and penetration 24.

  • 9x21mm SP13. Top pick with 47 armor damage and 36 flesh damage.
  • 5.7x28mm SS190. Not the cheapest, but the best choice with 43 penetration and 37 piercing damage.
  • 4.6x30mm AP SX. Slightly increases recoil, but has the best stats of 46 armor damage and 47 flesh damage.
  • 9x39mm 7N12BP. Also with increased recoil in favor of 68 armor penetration and 48 flesh damage.
  • .366-TKM ECO. A balanced supply with parameters 30 and 30 slightly dropping the accuracy of rifles.
  • 45x39mm. There are two good options here: BS with 57 penetration and 51 penetration and 7N39 Needle with 60 penetration and 62 penetration, but with more recoil.

  • 5.56x45mm M995. Good for AK and other rifles. The penetration parameter is 58, and the flesh damage is 53.
  • 7.62x39mm PSU. More ammunition for several types of Kalashnikov and Simonov carbines. Damage to armor is 63, to flesh – 47, but recoil and accuracy suffer a little.
  • 7.62x51mm M61. Sniper round with 83 armor penetration and 68 penetration.
  • 7.62x54R SNB. A favorite among owners of Mosin rifles. Penetration – 87, flesh damage – 62.
  • 12.7x55mm PS12B. Best choice for ASh-12 with 57 armor damage and 46 penetration.

This is a list of standard ammunition in its optimality for each type of weapon. Obviously, price will often be the deciding factor and you won’t always be able to afford the best ammo, but now you’ll have a rough guideline for the raids you decide to prepare for in depth.
