Escape from Tarkov has been in early access since August 2016 and is still in beta. As you can imagine, there are performance issues in the game, but we hope our guide will help you deal with them.
We will help you optimize your Escape from Tarkov settings so that you can play more smoothly. In this guide, we will touch on Escape from Tarkov performance issues such as stuttering, stuttering, consistently low framerates, stuttering, sudden latency spikes, and sudden framerate drops.
The first thing you need to do is make sure your computer meets the system requirements below. If your hardware does not match them, the problems mentioned may be related to this. In this case, we recommend upgrading. The game is very processor intensive, so free up its resources or buy a more powerful one.
Minimum system requirements
- Operating system: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit)
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo/Intel Core i3 2.4 GHz or AMD Athlon/Phenom 11 2.6 GHz
- Memory: 6 GB
- Video card: DX9 compatible graphics card with 1 GB VRAM
- Disk space: 20 GB
Recommended system requirements
- Operating system: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit)
- CPU: Intel Core i5/Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz, AMD FX/AMD Athlon 3.6 GHz
- Memory: 8 GB
- Video card: DX11 compatible graphics card with 2 GB VRAM
- Disk space: 20 GB
It happens that one or more models are indicated in the requirements for a video card, but this is not the case. To check which version of DirectX your card is compatible with, follow these steps:
- Open the menu Start.
- In the search bar enter dxdiag and press Enter.
- When requesting permission to verify that drivers are digitally signed, we recommend that you click Yes.
You should now see your version of DirectX.
There are many methods to improve performance in Escape from Tarkov. Let’s start with the most obvious.
Update your graphics card drivers
It may sound trite, but updating your drivers is really the first thing to try, because usually new drivers from AMD and NVIDIA are able to significantly increase the frame rate. It’s easy and no different than updating any other software.
Open the app AMD Radeon Software (for AMD graphics cards) or NVIDIA GeForce experience (for NVIDIA graphics cards) and check for updates. If they are available, download and install them.
Graphics settings
The next step is to optimize the settings in the game itself. This is most likely what you were looking for here, so let’s get started.
Please note that these are high-performance settings that are primarily relevant for systems that barely meet the minimum or recommended requirements. If you have a powerful computer and don’t want to sacrifice graphics for speed, you can skip this step.
Here’s what needs to be done:
- Run Escape from Tarkov.
- Open the menu Settings and click on tab Graphic arts.
- Install Screen resolution equal to the native resolution of your monitor.
- Select Screen Mode fullscreen.
- Make sure the checkbox V-sync not exposed.
- Set the average Texture quality.
- Set low Shadow quality.
- Set parameter Detailing of objects at 3.5.
- Set parameter General visibility at 3000.
- Set parameter Shadow Visibility at 75.
- Select Smoothing TAA.
- Install Resampling in 1x off.
- Disable HBAO.
- Disable SSR.
- For parameter Anisotropic filtering select Only textures.
- Install sharpness in 1.3.
- Ask Frame limit in the lobby equal to 60.
- Ask frame limit in game equal to 120.
- Untick Z Blur.
- Untick Chromium. aberrations.
- Untick Noise.
- Untick Grass shadow.
Game setup
You can also further optimize the game settings to improve performance. Just follow these steps:
- On the menu Settings click on the tab A game.
- If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, in case of performance problems, uncheck Enable NVidia Highlights.
- Check the box Auto cleaning of RAM.
- Make sure the checkbox is checked Use only physical coresif you have a processor with multithreading or SMT support.
- Install View area at 75 (or higher if you like and have the opportunity).
- Install head bob in 0.2.
Optimizing NVIDIA Control Panel Settings
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, the NVIDIA Control Panel settings can be optimized as follows:
- open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Click on an item Adjusting picture settings with preview on the left side of the tab 3D settings.
- Click Custom settings focusing on and move the slider towards the value Performanceif it’s not already there.
- Click Apply.
Fine! Now let’s set up some settings specifically for Escape from Tarkov:
- Click Manage 3D settings.
- Click Software settings.
- Select from the drop down menu Escape from Tarkov. If the game is not there, click Add and find EscapeFromTarkov.exe.
- Set parameter Power management mode into meaning Maximum performance. You may need to compare this option with the mode Optimum power supplybecause the effect depends on the specific video card.
- Set parameter Preferred refresh rate into meaning Maximum available.
- Turn on Shader caching.
- Set parameter Texture Filtering – Quality into meaning High performance.
- Disable option Triple buffering.
- Disable option Vertical sync pulse.
- Set parameter Pre-prepared virtual reality footage equal to 1.
If you’re playing on a laptop, make sure your preferred GPU is selected High performance NVIDIA processor
AMD Radeon Settings Optimization
If you have an AMD graphics card, the settings can be optimized as follows:
- open Radeon settings.
- Click on tab Games.
- Click on a section global settings.
- In step Anti-aliasing mode select Override application settings.
- Install Smoothing level in 2X.
- Turn on Anisotropic filtering mode.
- Install Anisotropic filtering level in 2X.
- AT Texture Filtering Quality select Performance.
- AT Wait for vertical update select Always off.
- AT Tessellation Mode select Override application settings.
- Install Max tessellation level at 32x or lower.
Windows update optimization
Next, we can take a simple step that will free up some resources:
- open Update and Security on the panel Windows settings.
- Click Delivery optimization.
- Make sure the setting Allow downloads from other computers disabled.
Disabling OneDrive
We also recommend turning off OneDrive when you’re not using it. Right-click the OneDrive icon on the taskbar and click Close OneDrive.
Discord optimization
If you’re using Discord to communicate while playing, or if it’s just running when you’re playing alone, it can also be quickly optimized. Here’s how it’s done:
- Open Discord and go to the page Application settings.
- Click on an item Appearance and disable the option hardware acceleration.
- Click on an item Overlay.
- Make sure the setting Enable in-game overlay disabled.
Optimizing Google Chrome
If you use Google Chrome, hardware acceleration should also be disabled:
- Open Google Chrome and visit the page Settings.
- Scroll all the way down and open the tab Additional.
- Scroll all the way down again and disable the option Use hardware acceleration (if available).
- Disable option Do not disable services running in the background when the browser is closed.
- Restart Google Chrome.
Power Optimization
You can improve performance by enabling a high performance power plan. Here’s how it’s done:
- Open the menu Start.
- Enter in the search bar powercfg.cpl and press Enter.
- Select scheme High performance.
Enable game mode
Windows 10 has a so-called Game Mode that we recommend enabling:
- Open the menu Start.
- Enter Game Mode and press Enter.
- Make sure the setting is enabled Game mode.
SSD
If you have Escape from Tarkov installed on your HDD (which we don’t recommend), you can significantly speed up loading times by moving the game to an SSD (if available).
Conclusion
That’s all! We hope that you were able to raise the frame rate.
If you have high ping, we recommend that you check out our guide on how to reduce ping in games. And since Escape from Tarkov is very CPU intensive, you might want to consider buying a new CPU, and maybe a graphics card or more RAM if you have the budget.
