Developers Fable shared details about the combat mechanics, called “style-weaving” (interweaving of styles). Playground Games Associate Game Director Will Kennedy spoke about the philosophy behind the system during a Q&A session at gamescom 2026.

Team strived create combat that would be easy to understand for newcomers while still staying true to the classic RPG series. We are talking not only about the mechanics, but also about the trademark humor of the franchise, which is also reflected in the battles, in particular through the ability to turn opponents into chickens.

When we talked about staying true to the classic franchise, we thought about how accessible the combat was, and we knew we wanted to keep some of that feeling in our game. But at the same time, we are making a game for the modern gamer.

We wanted the combat to have both breadth and depth, so we came up with the idea of style-weaving combat. We wanted the transition from one technique to another to be smooth and easy, and this, combined with leveling up the character, gave the desired result.

The style-weaving system allows players to freely combine different types of weapons and spells, creating unique fighting styles to suit their tastes. Kennedy explained that customization affects every piece of equipment:

  • long-range and melee weapons;

  • four spell slots that can be upgraded;

  • Transitions between moves designed to feel as smooth and responsive as possible.

According to the game director, after a short gaming session, the player has a “really wide, deep and rich set of options” for choosing battle tactics.

Being able to switch between techniques so freely and making the fight feel so responsive and satisfying is something we’re really proud of. Because I think we’ve found a balance that remains accessible but still has the right amount of depth. The result is both true to the spirit of the series and relevant for modern players, and sometimes this is something to be proud of.

Fable will be released on February 23, 2027 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
