How many memories, as well as hours played, have you connected with the Left 4 Dead series and would you like to repeat this experience again? On September 12th, Turtle Rock Studios, which includes the people behind the legendary first and second installments of Left 4 Dead, unveiled this opportunity with the release of a new co-op zombie first-person shooter called Back 4 Blood. The game received the mechanics already familiar to everyone, as well as some innovations introduced for a more exciting pastime.

But is everything as rosy as it might seem at first glance, and is this really the very heir to Left 4 Dead that fans have been waiting for? This is what we will try to figure out in the Back 4 Blood review.

Starting with the gameplay, I would like to touch upon the most important component of any shooter – gunplay. Despite some clumsy animations, at first it is quite pleasant to destroy endless hordes of zombies using a variety of guns. You really feel the recoil, which makes any weapon a pleasure to control. However, there is no gravity in it and ultimately it feels like a toy – the reloading animations are sharp, the shooting itself seems to be a bit twitchy and after a while it starts to annoy more and more. Of course, the original L4D series was no better, but please remember what year both titles came out.

The mechanic of upgrading all existing weapons dilutes the situation. You can install any kind of optics on absolutely any gun, for example, a sniper scope on a shotgun, and, by the way, it will still be playable. Oddly enough, each of the attachments gives additional characteristics, whether it is an improvement in the range of a bullet, easier control or an increase in the volume of the magazine. Also, modifications are of different quality: from simple to legendary. Therefore, it is always nice to find something more powerful than what is currently installed in the barrel.

However, the quality is not only for the body kits, but also for the guns themselves, acquired during the passage of missions or in stores in safe zones. On the one hand, this mechanic can give some motivation to search for new and more useful loot, as is done in loot shooters, but it also has a drawback – from time to time you will have to part with your favorite weapon, in which you invested copper (currency inside missions ) by purchasing various modifications. In almost all cases, a higher quality cannon will perform better than an existing full attachment weapon. But you cannot ignore any gains, since the next task will become more difficult than the previous one. Therefore, this situation often happens when you change your favorite AK-47 for an epic shotgun or something like that.

The main distinguishing feature of the new Back 4 Blood from the legendary Left 4 Dead is the card modification system. This mechanic brings roguelike elements to the game, which, hypothetically, should improve the replayability of the project. The player has the opportunity to build a deck of 15 cards that will benefit throughout the passage. Before each new mission, you choose one modification from your deck and, in the end, as you progress through the levels, you collect the entire list of your cards. In addition, additional cards are scattered at locations: paid and free. Free mods are standard mods that give extra health, stamina, increased copper inbound, and so on. Paid skills are more interesting passive skills that you may not even have in your arsenal.

But that is not all. Before each mission, you see negative modifiers that diligently interfere with your progress: thick fog, complete darkness, enhanced walkers, armored zombies, bosses that appear right in the middle of the level, and much more. With each task, such mods become more and more, respectively, the passage is more and more difficult. And this is a really cool mechanic that gives a lot of interest to Back 4 Blood’s replayability. With each new campaign, you simply cannot imagine what “gift of fate” the game will present this time.

In addition to cards and various modifiers in B4B, there is the possibility of choosing heroes, each of which has a skill: one adds characteristics to the whole team, and the second gives a unique passive ability. Playing as a team, you can collect convenient combinations that will become good support when completing difficult missions.

There are currently three modes in Back 4 Blood: Solo Campaign, Co-op Campaign, and Swarm. I would like to note right away that the solo company is not of any interest, since you still play with bots, whose intelligence, to put it mildly, is absent, which is why you should not expect adequate help from them. Co-op campaign is the most important mode in the game, where you can find random party members or assemble your own team in order to advance through missions. The sorties themselves are divided into four acts and can be completed on three difficulties: Recruit, Veteran, and Nightmare. Due to the possibility of increasing power with the help of cards, the game assumes a gradual increase in complexity. That is, if you do not have a good deck yet, then it is not recommended to immediately jump to the nightmare.

With regards to the plot, you should not even try to feel the “drama” of this story, since it is as clichéd and banal as possible. The characters are superheroes who will break through everywhere in the cinematics and defeat everyone, and the missions are not distinguished by their elaboration. As a rule, you will have to get from point A to point B, and only occasionally you come across interesting moments, such as defending a point under a rock from a jukebox or firing a howitzer through tunnels in order to collapse them.

So we got to the only PvP mode called “Swarm”. Players are divided into two teams, where some play the role of zombies, while others must survive. Playing as a zombie, you have to choose from several types of elite monsters, which have their own subspecies, and moreover, during the battle they need to be pumped, improving certain skills. At first, this whole mess seems very amusing and, perhaps, in this mode you will spend a couple of hours. However, there is no motivation in this, and it gets boring pretty quickly. I’d love to see a classic mode, like protection from huge waves of zombies or something similar.

Now let’s move on to no less important aspects for the perception of the gameplay: graphics and soundtrack. Graphically, the game is done well: soap textures are extremely rare at locations, weapons are worked out at the proper level, so in rare moments of calm it is even pleasant to look at it. The same can be said for all varieties of zombies, which are beautifully designed and even in dynamic scenes, you will notice scars, torn flesh and the like. But despite all of the above, it still feels like a little more modern textures have been pulled over an old game. By the way, you can evaluate the external and audio components in the recording of our broadcast.

With regards to audio accompaniment, then everything is up to par. The sound of shooting from any weapon turned out to be deep and rich, and the wheezing and shouts of zombies can sometimes even unexpectedly scare. The music in Back 4 Blood perfectly emphasizes the atmosphere of the zombie apocalypse, while it does not stick out against the background of the general chaos. But, unfortunately, you quickly get used to it, so over time you start to “fly out” of the atmosphere when you meet one on one with the minuses.

Overall, the gaming experience was entertaining, especially when playing in a group with friends, as well as collecting interesting combinations of cards and heroes. However, Back 4 Blood stands as a full-fledged AAA project, so some of the minuses feel more critical. If you really buy a game, then only after waiting for discounts or using a Game Pass subscription.

Be sure to write in the comments your opinion about the brainchild of Turtle Rock Studios and how you liked the game or not.
