In Horizon Zero Dawn, die-hard treasure hunters can find the best armor in the game. Here’s how to get it – and find all the batteries you’ll need. The game has a side quest called “Ancient Armory”. which is rated at level 25 but is revealed in the starting zone if you can find it. As you can guess from the name, the reward for it will be something from the era before the apocalypse – the same armor called the “Shield Weaver”. It’s by far the best armor in Horizon Zero Dawn, but you’ll need to find a few batteries to get it.
They are definitely worth looking for. The Shield Weaver armor cannot be modded, but it has excellent resistance to all damage categories, so it easily outperforms anything you can upgrade yourself. But its main charm is that before it needs a cooldown, it completely reflects significant damage. That is, you may not receive any damage from hits even several times in a row, if you manage to rest for a few seconds between them. Plus, it’s not scary at all (hello Silent Hunter fans), with a cool shimmery effect.
Below, we’ll walk you through exactly how to start the Ancient Armory quest, where to find the power supplies you need to complete it, and how to solve the puzzles that separate you from the best armor in Horizon Zero Dawn. Beware – the text contains spoilers for the names of missions and dungeons.
Find bunker ruins and holo-locks
To activate the Ancient Armory quest, you can find a battery for the task “find a use for the battery” or complete the missions of the Horizon Zero Dawn prologue so that you can leave the Embrace zone and go to the Sacred Lands map, where the main quest will begin.
Either way, you’ll need to leave The Embrace and head north along the main road. Watch out for the rainbow-like ruin symbol on the radar and map. You need the Bunker – it is located in the western part of this area, closer to the mountain range that separates the Embrace from the Carja Territories.
Go down to the Bunker dungeon (don’t miss the Metal Flower) and reach the locked room where the armor is stored. Standing with your back to the entrance to the dungeon, look to the right – you will find one of the holo-locks that are periodically found in the game.
To open this hololock, you will need two batteries. One of them can be found even before the end of the prologue, but you can return for it later. Don’t worry, below we list all the places where the batteries are located.
When you open the first hololock in the bunker, there will be another one between you and the ancient armor. For it, you will need three more batteries. Unfortunately, they are located in dungeons, which cannot be accessed until certain story quests are completed.
To collect all the batteries for the Ancient Armory quest in Horizon Zero Dawn, you need to advance quite a bit in the main story. But the Shield Weaver is worth it – this armor will serve you well in the more difficult side quests and late game.
- Battery in the bunker – any time after Aloy’s adulthood.
The first battery can be found in the Embrace Ruins dungeon (starting location). This is the dungeon that Aloy explored as a child during her training. Return to the Ruins as an adult and look for places where stalactites and stalagmites form barriers. Break them with a spear to see the rooms behind them. One of them contains a battery. And don’t forget the Metal Flower.
- Power element of the Great Mother – during or after the story quest in the Womb of the Mountain of the Great Mother.
You will find the second power element even before the end of the prologue. When Aloy wakes up in Greatmother’s Mountain, search the rooms around the angular corridor (look at the map). Next to a small tunnel that you can crawl into, you will find a battery. If you suddenly miss it, you can come back here later. The door can be closed when fast moving, but can be opened again if you move to a more distant place and get on foot or on horseback.
- Ultimate Master’s Power Cell – during or after the story quest “Master’s Limit”
The third battery in Horizon Zero Dawn is located at the very top of the tower in the Master’s Reach, which you will explore in the quest of the same name. After reaching the conference room – the last goal of this dungeon – jump over the elevator shaft and climb the rock – the battery is at the very top.
- Death Treasure Battery – during or after the story quest “Treasure of Death”
The fourth battery can be found in the ruins called “Death Treasure”, first available in the story quest of the same name. Look in the side rooms, it’s not so well hidden.
- Battery in Gay-Prime – during or after the story quest “The Fallen Mountain”
The last battery is in Gaia Prime, and you won’t be able to get there until the very end of the main quest. It is best to look for it when you first visit a dungeon with active checkpoints. Go straight through the room where you see the hologram and collect the quest item. Then take a look at the rope leading back to the start, but don’t go down it. Go back to the stairs and find a place on the edge of the abyss where you can climb down. After going down, go along the purple lights – you will reach directly to the fifth battery. To return to the quest objective, walk down in the direction of the rope.
After finding all five batteries, return to the Bunker and use the two darkened interfaces on the lock of the first door to fully power the holo-lock.
Rotate the lock controls to match the time on the nearby monitor. From left to right they should be directed up, right, down and again up.
You will pass to the second castle. In the darkened interfaces, the batteries must be inserted again, and then the control units must be rotated to match the angles on the display, from left to right: right, left, up, right, left.
By opening both sets of holo-locks with the power of the batteries, you will receive a treasure chest. Check your inventory for the appropriate section and open it. That’s where the Shield Weaver will be.
That’s all it takes to find all the batteries, open the bunker doors and get the Shield Weaver, the best armor in the game. If you need more help, let us know in the comments.
