Xiaomi has already officially unveiled its new flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi 11, for 2021. It will replace its predecessor with the designation Xiaomi Mi 10. Is it worth buying a new smartphone or making sense to stay with the more affordable model of the previous generation? You will find out the answer in our review.
Design and construction
In terms of the models’ appearance, we are faced with elegant forms and impeccable surface treatment in both cases. As the flagship model, Mi 10 and Mi 11 offer rounded glass and metal panels and the high-quality construction of the device body. The Mi 10 is available in several color options reflected both on the edges and on the back of the device.
If you are not a supporter of the traditional glass-metal tandem, you may be interested in the limited edition of the new smartphone Xiaomi Mi 11. It offers a couple of versions of the device with a back cover made of environmentally friendly material imitating natural leather texture. This material brings new color options as well as new sensations from the very use of the smartphone, along with new stereo speakers from the workshop of the famous brand Harman / Kardon.
With the change of generations, the display diagonal’s size has increased, and its refresh rate. While the model Mi 10 offered a 6.67-inch AMOLED Full HD + display (2340 x 1080 pixels) with a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio and brightness up to 1200 nits, the new Mi 11 comes with a display diagonal increased to 6.81 inches… It is a 2K AMOLED display (3200 x 1440 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9 and brightness up to 1500 nits. There is support for HDR 10+ color gamut, DCI-P3, and a perforated hole for the front camera in both cases.
The novelty includes a higher refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which is dynamic and is complemented by a sampling rate of up to 480 Hz. Another advantage of the Mi 11 is the use of a new, more durable protective glass called Corning Gorilla Glass Victus…
In terms of performance, the new flagship model clearly dominates the Mi 10. It will offer the latest octa-core processor in its hardware—Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G, which is successfully complemented by the Adreno 660 graphics chip. According to the manufacturer, this luxury tandem received more than 745 points in the AnTuTu performance tests.
On the other hand, the company shouldn’t be ashamed of the older model Xiaomi Mi 10. It will still offer a reasonably powerful 2020 flagship processor. In particular, this Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 supports connecting to 5G networks, which is complemented by the graphics accelerator Adreno 650. This set should easily cope with any application from Google Play and work in a resource-intensive multitasking mode.
The flagship smartphone of the previous generation Mi 10 offered the main camera, composed of a primary 108-megapixel sensor, complemented by a 2MP depth sensor, a 2MP super-macro sensor, and an ultra-wide-angle lens with a 123-degree image coverage angle of 13MP resolution. The new Mi 11 retains the 108MP main sensor but is complemented by a 5MP super macro lens (2MP for the previous generation model) and an ultra-wide-angle lens with a 13MP sensor.
The manufacturer also noted an improvement in the quality of night photos and optimization of the software with the arrival of a new version of the add-on marked MIUI 12.5. It is this update that could bring additional improvements for both smartphones. Both can record 8K video (30fps) and 4K video (60fps). The same resolution – 20 megapixels – is offered by the front cameras located in the display’s perforated holes.
Battery and charger
The Mi 10 model is powered by a battery with a capacity of 4780 mAh that can be charged quickly with wired (30W), wireless (30W), or 10W reverse charging. New with nameplate Mi 11 has a slightly smaller battery – 4600 mAh… However, this model’s top-up equipment is more powerful: up to 55W wired, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse charging.
The new smartphone packaging also caused some controversy: Mi 11 should no longer contain a charger on the Chinese market, following American Apple devices. New 55W wired charger will be sold separately, or the manufacturer will offer an alternative: buying a package without a charger or with a charger at the same selling price.
Price and availability
As for the selling price of the new Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone, it starts at RMB 3999. Currently, it is approximately 501 EUR / 613 USD… At this price, this is excellent, even unsurpassed equipment, but we do not yet know if the smartphone is available worldwide or if this price will remain valid only for the Middle Kingdom. However, we can say that the sales of the Mi 11 model began in China on 01/01/2021. But for a very reasonable price, you can also get the slightly older Xiaomi Mi 10 model, which is still on sale. The supply of international sellers is currently 469 € / 576 USD…
Xiaomi Mi 10 or Mi 11: final assessment
Replacing Mi 10 with Mi 11, we only recommend to real fans of the brand… If you want to save some money, the older Xiaomi Mi 10 in the global version is a powerful yet perfect choice. On the contrary, if you want the best that the Chinese manufacturer has to offer, get the Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone. However, you still have to wait for its international sales.
