Marvel could seriously expand the Punisher’s story. A new insight indicates that the character’s next chapter will abandon the one-off special format. According to sources, a sequel to the Disney special starring Jon Bernthal is already being discussed at the studio, but the final form of the project has not yet been determined.
According to several insiders, including Daniel Richtman, Marvel bosses are in the process of discussion format of the sequel The Punisher: One Last Kill – some see it as a TV series, while others are considering the possibility of making a full-fledged film. If the information is confirmed, we will be talking about a significant increase in scale compared to the last solo appearance of the character, which fit into a separate hour-long special.
In the original special, Frank Castle searched for the meaning of life beyond revenge, but unexpected circumstances again pulled him into confrontation and carnage on the street. Some viewers criticized Marvel for telling the same story over and over again, but they praised Bernthal’s portrayal of the Punisher and his appearance in Spider-Man.
The Marvel Television Special Presentation format was originally intended to be a short standalone project, continuing the tradition of the studio’s earlier one-shots. However, a new report suggests that Marvel now sees more potential in Castle’s story than one special could possibly contain. A full-length series would give the character space to develop his surroundings and long-term storylines, bringing the format closer to the structure of his former Netflix show.
A full-length film would have elevated Frank Castle’s importance in the main MCU timeline.
Either of these scenarios would be a noticeable shift for the character, who Marvel has until now kept in a separate, isolated corner of its universe. Bernthal’s Punisher is slowly making a comeback in the MCU, playing a key role in the season finale of Daredevil and also appearing for more than 10 seconds in Spider-Man: New Day.
Bernthal, who co-wrote and executive produced the special with director Reynaldo Marcus Green, has not publicly commented on the rumors. Marvel representatives even more so.
