Netmarble reported a large-scale data leak after a hacker attack

Netmarble has published the results of an internal investigation into an incident that occurred on November 22, when hackers hacked into a portal with PC games. According to official information, the data of about 6.11 million accounts, including inactive ones, were compromised. The leak included names, dates of birth and encrypted passwords, but unique identifiers (like ID card numbers) and sensitive personal data were not affected.

Separately, it is noted that about 31 million outdated IDs and encrypted passwords related to long-deleted or duplicated records were also stolen, since previously users could create up to five accounts per person.

The incident also affected the affiliate network: data from approximately 66 thousand gaming clubs operating before 2015, as well as information about 17 thousand current and former employees of the company, were leaked.

Netmarble said it disclosed the extent of the leak for the sake of transparency and to minimize confusion among users. The company apologized for the incident and said that:

  • Conducts extensive security checks.
  • Cooperates with government agencies.
  • Prepares a set of measures to prevent similar cases in the future.
