In recent years, on the gaming industry market, we are less and less likely to meet new, and most importantly, high-profile projects of the MMORPG genre. At the end of September, the release of the game New World took place, which made a lot of noise among the gaming community, which was divided into two camps – some consider the game a masterpiece, while others are a complete failure.
In this review, we will tell you about the main mechanics, leveling, PvP and PvE activities, as well as share our general impressions of this project.
Let’s start with the character creation process. Of course, you won’t see an incredible editor like The Sim’s or anything like that. You can choose gender, face presets, different hairstyles, mustaches and beards, tattoos, scars and even makeup. Most of the faces leave a lot to be desired, but remember – we are playing a non-Korean MMORPG. Male characters are so brutal that only a thick beard will brighten them up, but for lovers of female heroes there are several pretty faces. Otherwise, the editor is very flexible: you can even create a woman with a false beard, as if she were going to perform in the theater. Well, since there is absolutely no class system in the game, in the process of creating a hero you will not see the usual choice of archetypes.
Since we’re talking about the absence of classes, let’s talk about this in more detail. In MMORPG New World, there is no archetype system familiar to the genre, where you could immediately choose a tank, a healer or a strong damage dealer. Nevertheless, you need to decide on your role. It all depends only on what type of weapon will be used most often. For example, if you want to play as a healer, then you should find a healing staff and engage in various activities in order to increase its level, get skill points and learn skills. Having pumped the staff enough and having received the necessary skills, you can apply for the role you have chosen.
What I really liked about NW was the progression system. Probably, many are accustomed to getting a certain amount of points when the level rises, which can be invested in a particular skill. In New World, the level of the character and the weapon exists separately. With the hero, everything is simple – each new lvl you get 3 points for the distribution of such characteristics as strength, agility, intelligence, constitution and focus.
But with weapons, everything is much more interesting. Each species has its own personal level and, importantly, personal skill points. That is, you don’t have to worry about what kind of weapon to put skill points into, if they were common, as in most other MMORPGs. In addition, each of the species has two branches of development. For example, you can use a one-handed quick ax as a melee weapon or even throw it like a tomahawk, and for a bow it is possible to form a build against a single target or for mass destruction. When pumping weapons to the maximum level, 20 skill points are given, but each branch individually has 19 skills (38 in total), so you have to invest them wisely. However, in case of an error, there is always an option to reset and reassign skills. In general, pumping guns is easy to understand – just kill monsters and get personal experience.
The assortment of weapons in New World is pretty good. At his disposal, the player can get a sword with a shield, a spear, a quick one-handed hatchet, a two-handed hammer and an ax, a musket, a rapier, a staff of fire or healing, as well as a magical ice gauntlet. Your character is able to carry two weapons at the same time, switching between which is carried out at any time with one button.
Now I want to talk about the combat system, which has become almost the most discussed aspect among the players in the MMO community, since some are outraged by the small number of skills on the panel. To begin with, New World has a full-fledged non-target system where you need to hit the target, especially with a bow, musket, staff or ice glove. Given this fact, you need to rely not only on skills, but also on personal skill. In addition, you will have to block attacks or dodge in time so as not to receive a ton of damage from a strong mob in PvE or during PvP battles. You can put three skills on the panel.
And what do we get in the end? We have six skills that need to be combined with each other and at the same time accurately adjust the distance and timings in order to attack, block and dodge in time. At a stretch, it can be called a soul like combat, only with additional skills. If you manage to simply “spam” some monsters with ordinary attacks, endlessly clicking LMB, then with other players in PvP such a trick will not be crowned with success.
It’s no secret that initially New World was planned as a sandbox MMO, and only then the developers decided to retrain into a full-fledged MMORPG, so many of the primary mechanics, oddly enough, migrated to the final version. The player has a huge variety of different crafts at the disposal of the player, which are really interesting to understand and engage in pumping. What is important, for every mining of ore, chopping wood, skinning an animal, and the like, you gain experience, so when going out for resources there is no feeling of wasted time. Moreover, after the hike, you return to the city, where you start processing everything that has been mined, and this also brings a considerable amount of “exp” depending on the scale of the work. Crafting in New World is really useful for both the novice artisan and the long term. For example, I earned gold by creating bags to increase the weight of inventory and selling them at a good price at an auction – the product is very popular and easy to do. In the future, you can craft legendary weapons and armor, but for this you need to do everything at once. For the system of processing resources and creating items, it is definitely a big plus.
With regards to professions, I would like to highlight fishing separately. The mechanics itself is standard: we throw the fishing rod on the space bar and when a circle appears around the float, we sharply press the same button. Then we begin to draw out the prey also using the spacebar, avoiding the appearance of red lines in the circle. Among other things, it is required to monitor the circles on the water and if they form, then it is undesirable to pull at this time, otherwise there is a risk of breaking the line and causing great harm to the fishing rod. There is no automation here and all actions have to be performed manually: from putting the bait on the hook to pulling the catch.
We also found it interesting how the fish and objects in the water are displayed during stretching. After casting the rod many times, you gradually begin to distinguish the catch. Inanimate objects, such as oars, anchors, chests, do not try to “run away” from you and you just gradually get them out.
The most pleasant thing when hiking, whether for resources, quests or any activity, is the graphic and sound component of the project. New World is one of the few MMORPGs (to be honest, I don’t even remember where this is), where the forests are really dense, and not just some bare reliefs with a few trees. Sometimes you even catch yourself thinking that in some places they sorted out with vegetation, as the visibility from the third person is getting worse. The very same graphics and animations within the genre look good.
Of course, Amazon still has something to work on, since you can often see various bugs: legs sinking into the ground during resource extraction, the appearance of stripes on the screen and the absence of prompts for action buttons if the Russian keyboard layout was on in Windows when the game was turned on, and so on. …
With regards to biomes, it is not so diverse. In the “New World” is very lacking, for example, winter or fire locations and the like. However, each of the currently existing biomes is permeated with a unique atmosphere due to music, lighting and aggressive inhabitants – one location will seem kind, rainbow and warm, when the presence in another feels uncomfortable, as if it were already some kind of horror with an MMORPG. But again, I would like to see more cardinal differences.
Sound designers and composers want a separate plus. Walking around the locations every now and then you can hear various shots, screams, the sound of a pickaxe hitting ore veins and much more. And the audibility changes depending on how the rocks or other obstacles for the dispersion of sound effects are located: among the dense forest biome, the sounds are more muffled when a truly breathtaking echo is heard on the bald terrain with rocks around or in caves. Moreover, you pay attention to this not only during the first hours of the gameplay, but also for a long time after, especially if you play with headphones. I was also pleased with the music, which fits perfectly into each biome and into the actions taking place, whether it be a battle or a calm outing on quests.
By the way, about the movements. At first, players have to move using their own two, since there are no vehicles in New World, and to use teleports, you first need to open them. The very same fast travel mechanics requires the resource “Azot”, which is mined in various activities. At first it may seem that there is always a lack of it, but literally by the 20th level, nitrogen becomes in excess. Therefore, you do not have to play the “running simulator” all the time.
As mentioned earlier, this project was originally developed as a sandbox MMO, and most likely, this influenced the poor development of the lore. Yes, there is an idea and a plot here, but you will not see any cinematics or really interesting dialogues, and most of the lore component is in the notes (recall that the game is still only in English). Nevertheless, it is interesting to run on story quests and they do not tire at all, which cannot be said about third-party and faction tasks. In the case of faction quests, it is still clear that this is a real grind of reputation and currency for buying good equipment. However, the sidequests were really disappointing, as they are often repeated no matter what part of the world you are in. In general, for some, this is not something very unpleasant, but for those who like to read interesting dialogues, seasoned with funny or dramatic stories, this will clearly become a minus.
What activities can the MMORPG New World offer? In addition to the above character progression and the ability to scrupulously engage in resource extraction, crafting and fishing, NW has group PvE and PvP activities that are worth paying attention to. At the moment, there are several expeditions (local dungeons), PvE arenas where you kill a boss in a group, as well as PvP sieges and seizure of territories. With regards to the expeditions, they are very high quality, both in terms of graphic and sound design. But these are not the dungeons that you will “trawl” over and over again with your group, as they are easily completed with random teammates, which you collect through the world chat or right before entering the instance, as in classic MMORPGs. All this is of course good, but some adventurers who quickly got to the cap are beginning to get bored with all these activities, so we hope that Amazon developers will keep the game updated as often as possible.
Summing up, I would like to say the following. In general, MMORPG New World turned out to be quite good, but with the proviso that the project will develop further, become overgrown with content and, of course, the plot. It is also important to note: the game was released practically in “greenhouse conditions”, since there are absolutely no new Western MMORPGs on the market and fans of the MMO community have long wanted something fresh.
New World grabs with its atmosphere, which is created through pleasant graphics and incredible work of sound engineers and composers, as well as through the opportunity to simply wander around the open world, collecting various resources to develop your craft skills. PvP, on the other hand, seemed more of a secondary activity, although it would seem that the main gameplay should have been tied to it. Well, all that remains is to play and wait for new updates.
Be sure to write in the comments which aspects of the gameplay you liked or disliked in New World.
