Razer Basilisk Ultimate Wireless Gaming Mouse Review

Razer was a pioneer in gaming peripherals and was in great demand with little to no competition. Later, however, something went wrong and more and more users abandoned their products. Now we can observe that Razer is again beginning to regain its position in the market of gaming devices, in particular, gaming “rodents”.

This review will take a look at the Razer Basilisk Ultimate Wireless Gaming Mouse and its pros and cons.

Packaging and equipment

Like other products from Razer, the packaging is made in black and green colors, has a glossy print of the device itself, as well as detailed specifications. Inside, the mouse and its components are packed in thicker cardboard so as not to damage the sample during transportation.

The kit includes a micro-USB cable, a small dongle installation station, a “whistle” (dongle) for wireless communication and a modular metal button, which we will talk about a little later. As with the Razer Viper 8k, unfortunately there are no spare Teflon feet.

Form factor and build quality

The Razer Basilisk Ultimate is ergonomically designed to fit well in the palm of your hand. The upper part of the mouse is made of pleasant soft-touch plastic, and the side grips are rubberized for better grip. And to be honest, the device “lies” in the hand very nicely, tightly and without attempts to escape from the palm.

When looking at the mouse from the front, a strong bevel to the left is noticeable, which gives a comfortable fit of the hand with a palm grip, and the position of the fingers 1-2-2 or a hybrid – when the middle and ring fingers lie on the RMB. Users with a large hand will be able to use the finger grip as well, but the claw is likely to be uncomfortable for everyone.

Below are white teflon legs, by the way, which seemed too thin to me. If you have bumps on the table, and the rug is thinner than three millimeters, then the back plastic part of the mouse will periodically cling to the carpet. Again, there will be no such “jambs” with an even table, but I could not remain silent about thin Teflon. Nevertheless, the mouse glides well on the carpet and is easy to control, even in dynamic shooters.

With regards to the build quality of the Basilisk Ultimate, everything is up to par – the sides are not squeezed through, there is no unpleasant backlash or crunch in the elements. But more about the rest in the next section.

Buttons, filling and “chips” of the device

As befits a premium segment, the Basilisk Ultimate’s internals are up to the mark: LMB and PCM are equipped with Razer’s own 70 million-click optical switches. I liked the clicks of this “rodent” much more than, for example, the Razer Viper 8k, although they have the same switches. Most likely, this is due to the filling of voids inside the mouse in the case of the Basilisk Ultimate, since it is much heavier than the above example: Basilisk – 105g, Viper – 69g.

The Basilisk Ultimate encoder is not exactly straightforward, as in addition to scrolling and pressing the wheel, it has two more buttons that are activated when the wheel is tilted to the left or right. In addition, it is possible to adjust the scroll density using an additional encoder at the bottom of the mouse. That is, you can make tactile scrolling with distinct cutoffs, or smooth scrolling without any clicks or other sounds. A very interesting function.

Just below the wheel are two buttons that are programmed to change DPI by default, but they can be customized to suit your own needs in the proprietary Razer Synapse 3 software.

On the left, there are two more customizable buttons that have a clear click without perceptible pre- and post-travel when pressed. They are slightly higher than the standard thumb position, therefore, do not interfere in any way during intense gameplay.

Also closer to the “nose” of the device is a rubber plug, in place of which you can install a metal button. This feature is often called the “sniper button”, however, in this context it is of little use and is rarely used in this way. However, you can set macros or any other functions that are required on this button, so it definitely won’t be superfluous. This can be done in the Synapse 3 software.

There are also controls on the bottom of the mouse – a small wheel for adjusting the stiffness of the encoder, a rodent on / on switch, a small compartment for transporting a USB dongle, a button for switching a custom profile, contacts for connecting the mouse to the docking station and, most importantly, a sensor.

The Razer Basilisk Ultimate is equipped with the flagship Focus + sensor, aka PixArt PMW3399, which has a sensitivity of up to 20,000 dpi and a polling rate of 1,000 Hz. Such a sensor cannot be “disrupted” even at the lowest sensitivity values. For the sake of fairness, I would like to note that such sensors installed in gaming mice are more “muscle flexing” in front of competitors than they have practical use. There are also cheaper solutions that are also impossible to disrupt, but they are installed in mid-budget devices.

And of course, I would like to note again what really disappointed. Unlike the same Razer Viper 8k and Razer Viper Ultimate, the Basilisk Ultimate has Teflon legs that feel thin. What is it fraught with? Faster wear of the legs, as well as the rug rubbing against the plastic, if there are irregularities on the table. If you have a perfectly flat table, as well as a rug with a Speed surface, then the legs will last for a long time. In other cases, they can be erased quickly enough.

Well, let’s briefly discuss highlighting. The Razer Basilisk Ultimate has three illuminated zones: a line to the left above the side buttons, an encoder illumination, and an engraved logo on the back of the device. All elements are perfectly in sync, and are also customizable in detail in the proprietary Razer Synapse 3 software.

When it comes to wireless connectivity, the Basilisk Ultimate uses a 2.4GHz connection type, which provides a perfect connection without the delay, as is the case with Bluetooth devices. Using the included USB extension cable, the dongle can be brought as close to the mouse as possible in order to eliminate interference with other radio frequencies.

The Razer Basilisk Ultimate has a built-in battery that the company claims can last up to 100 hours on a single charge. And yes, this is approximately the case if you use a “rodent” without backlighting. In practice, the Basilisk Ultimate lasts about one and a half / two weeks on a single charge (depending on how often you use it) and 3-4 days with backlighting at 50% brightness. In addition, the mouse can be connected via a cable if it manages to discharge itself at the most inopportune time.

Price and general impressions

At the time of writing this review, the Razer Basilisk Ultimate Wireless Gaming Mouse is on sale for $ 490. Again, this device has an excellent sensor, high-quality assembly and materials, good functionality, as well as wireless communication, however, the price may feel overpriced. On the other hand, in the market for top mass-market brands, peripherals of this class can cost plus / minus as well.

Although this “rodent” seemed heavy to me and I had to get out of the habit of the lightness of the Razer Viper 8k with a weight of 69 grams, the overall product turned out to be decent. After 2 and a half months of use, there was still no annoying backlash in the keys, and the wireless connection gives more room for action.
