Find all hidden areas in Dark Souls: Remastered. Next, we’ll tell you how to unlock the Painted World, the hidden zone in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, and more.
The secret areas in Dark Souls: Remastered are breathtaking. Not only because in these amazing locations you can meet unique opponents, hidden bosses and find special items, but also because they look incredibly cool. Plus, they’re pretty easy to spot. Even if you are new to this series and have not had time to thoroughly explore every centimeter of Lordran. If you have a feeling that you have missed something in the kingdom, we will help you figure it out.
In this guide, we will look at 4 unusual locations. One of them is technically not a secret area, however, returning to it is already a secret in itself. Then we will look at two hidden locations linked together into one. The remaining two secret areas are separate, each on its own. This includes the “Artorias of the Abyss” DLC zone, which is still only accessible through a rather difficult quest. If you’re lost, confused, or just want to see how fast you can get to these hidden areas, this guide should be of help to you.
How to access secret areas | Ash Lake, Painted World and Oolacile
Secret areas are hidden locations, each of which has its own characteristics. One of these “secrets” is a DLC expansion, but opening it is quite problematic, so we have highlighted it in our article as a separate area, although in reality it represents 3 or 4 zones at once.
Return to Northern Undead Asylum
The starting area of the game can be revisited. To return, you will need to unlock the elevator icon from Firelink Shrine (Firelink Shrine) to Northern Undead County (Northern Undead Parish). While you are riding the elevator, get off at the ruins and move along the narrow passage to the large nest.
In order to get back to the Northern Undead Sanctuary, you need to interact with the great raven’s nest high up in Firelink Shrine. On the way back, you will have the opportunity to face off against the Stray Demon boss and add an item called Strange Doll to your collection.
Great Hollow / Ash Lake
To get to the Hollow, head to the swamp below Blighttown. From there, go up the roots of the unusual tree and attack the walls to open a secret room with a chest. In this hidden room, also attack the walls to find another entrance leading to the Hollow.
The cavity is a long and dangerous descent that leads directly to the Ash Lake. Beware of strong enemies in this location. They can put a curse on you, and if you stumble, you will certainly perish after a long and bleak fall. If you still manage to survive on the way down, then you will fall into the Ash Lake.
Ash Lake is another small location with very strong opponents. You will have to fight for your life with the Hydra (Hydra) and cannibal clams, but this hard way leads to one of the best rewards. At the end of the path is a dragon that can give you the ability to turn into a dragon yourself. Or, which is also not bad, you will get a dragon head that can breathe fire.
Painted World of Ariamis
The Painted World of Ariamis is accessed through an imposing painting in the Anor Londo cathedral. To truly enter the Painted World, you’ll need a unique key called Strange Doll.
The Strange Doll can be found in a chamber in the Northern Undead District when you revisit this area. Use the giant nest in Firelink Shrine (we talked about this earlier) to return to Northern Undead County and get the Strange Doll – it’s in the same dungeon you started the game in.
The Painted World is a rather large area in the castle, where bloodthirsty enemies and an immortal dragon await you. To leave it, you need to go to the tower opposite the bridge and talk to Halfbreed Priscilla. This is an optional boss, but she will only fight you if you attack her.
Oolacile of the Abyss
A huge area was included in Dark Souls: Remastered, but accessing it is pretty tricky. You need to follow the steps below to “rescue” the Dusk of Oolacile, NPC, and collect the Broken Pendant.
Some of these steps can be completed early in the game, but it’s best to wait until after you’ve defeated Ornstein and Smough and obtained the Lordvessel.
- Travel to the Darkroot Basin and kill the Hydra.
- Leave the area and return later to the cave near where the Hydra spawns.
- Inside the cave there will be a golem. Kill him, then Zarya Olachil will appear. Talk to her.
- Now that you’ve saved Zarya, head to the Duke’s Archive. Defeat the Crystal Golem near the entrance. If you saved Zarya, he will drop a Broken Pendant.
- Return with the Broken Pendant to the cave where you found Dawn. A cutscene will play at the back of the cave, taking you to Olachil.
There are 4 bosses in this DLC area: Sanctuary Guardian, Astorias Abysswalker, Manus, Father of the Abyss, and Black Dragon Kalameet. You will also find new spells, new armor, new merchants and new weapons. In addition, there you can explore many areas, including the Royal Woods (Royal Woods), Oolacile Township and Chasm of the Abyss. This is a high-level zone, so only go there when you’re fully prepared.
