As you know, in Japanese or stylized games like them, there is a fad about food – in almost every character can buy food and eat, receiving bonuses to characteristics for this. Don’t be intimidated. Despite the dung exercises, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a very bright and interesting game. A kind of cross between action and farm simulator. And the title goddess of the harvest Sakuna, is as charming as three times more incompatible versions of the heroine of the cartoon “Masha and the Bear,” which can be fascinating. Just imagine, there is such a Sakuna-Masha standing in front of an exhausted bear and moaning, turning almost to hysterics: “Play with me, play with me!” Only in this case, she would add: “After all, I am a goddess, how dare you refuse a celestial woman ?!”
Yes, this small and amusing girl is the god of war and the goddess of fertility. She is still, of course, a princess, but she must already fulfill specific duties. And instead, he prefers to have fun, to gorge himself on divine feasts, and there to get drunk. Then, in such a state, he can easily beat and throw powerful samurai off the bridge.
After another such brawl, the gods’ patience ran out, and Sakuna was sent not just to the mortal world but to a remote and almost abandoned island, ordered to work and get rid of demons to earn forgiveness. And most importantly, you need to take care of a group of people who, out of hunger, made their way into the world of the gods and whistled rice from there. It was largely because of them that Sakuna made a fuss, trying to catch up with them. And now, ironically, it was with them that she was exiled to the island.
Naturally, the capricious princess of divine blood does not like all this, to put it mildly. And there are many funny situations connected with this. Now and then, we hear Sakuna’s screams, “How dare you talk to the goddess-like that ?!” She turns her nose up from a simple meal and once even tries to escape in splendid isolation from the island to “finally sleep in her warm bed.” But getting lost without a map in the dark, with cries of despair and sorrow, he returns.
Also, not all of the people who found themselves on the island have due reverence for the princess. For example, the same young boy, who eventually becomes a local blacksmith, at first addresses her like this: “Hey you, goddess or Buddha, I already forgot …”
But there is nowhere to go – you need to cooperate to survive. Therefore, responsibilities are immediately assigned. The mortals remain in the village, where they prepare food and equipment, while Sakuna runs through the surrounding caves, extracts resources for all this, fights, explores, and completes story missions. Naturally, in the end, everyone starts to warm up, worry and take care of each other. Although you cannot be sure of anything to the future with this restless goddess, you expect surprises from her and the general situation. And you wait.

However, the young goddess also has responsibilities in the village. It is she who sows the rice fields and monitors them. This should be done with the beginning of the new season – into chapters-seasons, and the story passage is broken down.
And each time, you need first to throw the seeds with pens. Periodically pull out the weeds, regulate the water level (if it rains, it is better to lower it, if the sun beats down – on the contrary), fertilize the soil with the same manure, then personally mow and collect the stems, dry them, carry into the house, sift there, getting rice directly.
It turns out a real, detailed, and complicated simulator of growing and harvesting rice. So complicated that the diet of our characters influences the composition of the fertilizer manure.
And everything affects the quality of the crop, which is assessed by various parameters, including taste and aroma. And this, in turn, determines how much the heroine’s characteristics will increase with the beginning of a new plot segment. Here is such a logical and straightforward principle of character leveling – how well you worked and ate what you planted or got, the stronger you became.
Also, Sakuna’s parameters are temporarily improved after joint dinners, for which the goddess herself chooses the menu – first, second, dessert and compote. The diet also determines what kind of bonus we receive. Simultaneously, for the dishes to be in principle, you need to regularly bring the ingredients to the local chef. If the food is pleasant, then the characters instead nibble. If not, they frown and snort. Well, the local blacksmith boy will make a new weapon for the materials we have collected.
You can’t fight on an empty stomach.
Against this background, Sakuna’s activities outside the village seem more familiar and straightforward, but nuances also exist. We choose a new location on the map and set off to clear it, fight both ordinary enemies and bosses. Simultaneously, the goddess jumps high, uses special skills and combos, and even clings to her scarf for opponents and environmental objects to quickly move to them.
For a long time, she deftly beats the animal in the air and relished throws opponents at each other. With an accurate blow, he sends stones at them – this also helps to break through stone barriers that prevent the passage. The only pity is that the control seems not very convenient from time to time, and the behavior of the heroine in battle is not always responsive.
The princess’s skills improve on their own with use. New ones also open up by themselves – you need to decide what gift to equip. Weapons are pumped in the same way – the more enemies they kill, the faster the moment will come when it will be possible to reveal the power of a particular thing to receive bonuses like increased damage.
At the levels, Sakuna collects resources and looks for chests with something especially valuable. The natural limitation here is time, which does not stop for a second. Night falls, the same bunnies and birds become many times stronger, and the stomach of the little goddess begins to rumble treacherously – you have to return to the village. And their new weeds have grown, the rice field is flooded with rain, a new batch of fertilizers must be pulled out of the toilet. All the time in Sakun’s business, there is no poor but proud (and hot-tempered) princess of peace.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin turned out to be bright, meticulous (in some places even too much), and a fascinating mixture of action and farm simulator. Moreover, it was also informative – I first learned how rice grows in general and is harvested. Of course, having to grind resources and weed fields over and over again can be exhausting. But the authors try not to delay with such moments – something is sure to happen, the little goddess is indignant also, slams the doors, and the plot, looking back at her with fear, moves on. The image of Sakuna makes you fall in love with the game, forcing you to carry out manure, plant rice, and mutual enemies again and again. I wonder what she will throw next.
Pros: unusual plot; a bright heroine; exciting gameplay at the intersection of action, platforming, and farm simulator; excellent graphics; nice music and voice acting.
Cons: problems with optimization and management on a PC; not everyone will like to continually squirm in the garden and grind resources (although in this case, these are the laws of the genre).
