Spider-Man: New Day has become the biggest box office hit of the summer and looks set to finish as the highest-grossing film in US history. Despite the overwhelming success, the head and chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Ravi Ahuja, said that he cannot yet give a release date for the fifth Spider-Man film.
At a conference in New York Ahuja told about the record box office of “New Day” – the result came as a surprise even to the studio itself.
We, of course, did not predict this. We thought the film would do well, but we didn’t expect it to be this good.
Most analysts already assumed that “New Day” would show decent box office receipts, but the final result exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts. This is especially noteworthy given the recent decline in interest in the superhero genre and the fact that the previous part, No Way Home, featured three Spider-Men, while A New Day was a much smaller event. Perhaps viewers were simply very interested in the personality of the mysterious heroine played by Sadie Sink.
Ahuja has his own theory as to why “New Day” exceeded expectations so much.
The movie itself is very emotional… It’s a little different from what superhero movies have been like lately. It’s still a superhero movie – there are a lot of big action scenes, it’s a lot of fun. But at the same time the film is emotional. Some spectators left the hall in tears, and this clearly resonated with the audience.
As for the fifth Spider-Man movie, Ahuja predictably didn’t give a concrete answer, only confirming what is already known: the film does not yet have a release date.
We don’t have a date for this film yet. It usually takes a couple of years, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes out next year.
Ahuja isn’t wrong about the “couple of years” between the main Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man films – the home trilogy was released exactly at that interval between 2017 and 2021. A full five years have passed between No Way Home and A New Day, and we can only hope that the wait won’t be so long this time.
The lack of new films has clearly only fueled audience interest: “A New Day” is on track to finish in third place at the box office in cinema history, having already surpassed “Avatar: The Way of Water” in global box office. The film is also on track to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ domestic record, which stood for over a decade and was not even broken by Avengers: Endgame.
Whether the next Marvel film, Avengers: Judgment Day, will be able to approach The New Day’s record numbers remains to be seen. However, considering that “Judgment Day” has already collected more than $50 million in ticket pre-sales approximately 100 days before the premiere, the film has every chance of showing very high results.
