Both. The game is real-time, but the pace is slower than regular RTS (and you can pause and fast forward). The game also features exploration, area control, economic development, combat, politics, and espionage – features that make it a true 4X game without detracting from the RTS experience.
On average, how long does one game last? Does it depend on the chosen faction?

In this mode, players take control of one of the main houses (Atreides, Harkonnen, Ekaz or Corrino) and fight through a number of unique scenarios and situations that will challenge them to use every system at their disposal to make progress. With procedurally generated maps and scenarios, randomized perks and challenges, iconic characters and houses, and a new way to play every time, Civil War offers an unprecedented level of replayability and immersion in the Dune universe.
Is there a tutorial mode?
There are 5 tutorial modes designed to help new players better understand the mechanics and gameplay of Dune: Spice Wars, which can be found in the single player menu.
Is Dune: Spice Wars an adaptation of a movie or a book?
Dune: Spice Wars is not a direct adaptation of any individual source. This is our understanding of this universe and its characters, so some aspects may differ from how they are depicted in specific sources.
While we try to focus primarily on books, we took inspiration from numerous sources when creating the game, such as board games, movies, TV shows, and the Dune expanded universe.
Did you take inspiration from previous Dune games when creating Dune: Spice Wars?
We’ve played all the Dune video games (especially Dune and Dune 2) and all the board games, so there’s some influence there. However, Dune Spice Wars is a very distinct game with a unique take on the fight for control of Arrakis.
Ordos?
Ordos, as most gamers know them, is a fictional house created and produced by Westwood Studios, which created several Dune RTS games in the 90s/00s. These games have no connection to Dune: Spice Wars other than they are based on the same IP, are owned by a different company, and therefore there are no plans to add them to Dune: Spice Wars.
Does the game use procedural map generation?
Yes, the maps are procedurally generated, with different options for size, wind strength, sandworm activity and many other parameters. Deep deserts are used as a kind of movement block (like the sea in other games), at least until you develop technologies that allow you to survive longer in the desert, or build a network or airfields. The maps will also include unique places that readers of the book will recognize.
Why did you choose a somewhat cartoonish and edgy art style?
Making a game on a desert planet comes with many challenges, one of which is making sure that what you stare at for hours isn’t tacky, even if it’s just rock and sand. We spent a lot of time working on the environments and even collaborated with a desert geologist to create things that could exist on such a planet. Stylized art direction allows for variety in colors and shapes to keep the environment gritty without being boring.
What languages does the game support?
The game currently supports English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Simplified Chinese and Russian.
Will you have mod support?
The game doesn’t currently support mods, but it’s a possibility.
Will there be DLC?
We are currently focused on delivering a complete and feature-rich product by the time we release 1.0. While we haven’t ruled out the possibility of future DLC if the launch is successful and players demand it, our primary focus post-launch will be on completing the planned free updates.
What platforms are supported?
The game is currently only available on Windows PC, but we are looking into bringing it to other platforms and OSes.
Can I play on Steam deck?
The game does not officially support Steam Deck, but we are open to exploring this feature in the future.
Does the game support cross-play with the Gamepass version?
Yes, it supports!
