Before the announcement and demonstration of the first trailer for the role-playing game “The Witcher 4,” a reporter from the IGN portal spoke with developers from CD Projekt RED. We mainly talked about Ciri and why she became the main character of the new game, and not Geralt of Rivia.
“She has always been the main one, since Saga, when you read about her in books. She’s an amazing, multi-layered character. And, of course, we have already said goodbye to Geralt as the main character. So this is a continuation. I think for all of us it was like it was meant to be. She’s always been like this.” — Małgorzata Mitraga, executive producer of The Witcher 4.
“She’s actually going to become a Witcher. She’s going to create her own code, but on her own terms. The way she deals with monsters, the way she deals with quests, adventures is her own unique path. And I also think it gives more opportunities to tell different stories here and there. Of course, we want to give the player the opportunity to explore more nuances, because that’s what we do. But she deserves it.” — Sebastian Kalemba, game director.
Both Mitrenga and Kalemba acknowledged that there may be backlash in some corners of the internet regarding Ciri being cast as the protagonist of The Witcher 4, but both insist that Ciri has always been the game’s protagonist.
“There was a certain intention behind this choice. It was far from roulette. This was no accident. I remember nine years ago we were discussing: “Who will be next?” The very, very immediate answer was Ciri. There are many reasons for this. We have already named several. But she really deserves a scene, and we want players to really connect with her story because she has so much to tell, so much to prove. The many challenges that lie ahead give us so much amazing energy and fuel to create an epic saga that we had no choice but to go for it. We all felt that this was the way to go. I believe this is a super good choice.” — Sebastian Kalemba, game director.
