A large-scale MMORPG based on the Lord of the Rings universe will never be released. Amazon has canceled an anticipated multiplayer project announced in 2019, which the company has confirmed to Bloomberg.
The game was developed by Amazon Game Studios in conjunction with the Chinese studio Leyou Technologies Holdings, which was acquired by the conglomerate Tencent Holdings last December. Contract negotiations have led to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent, as reported by people familiar with the matter. They asked not to be named as they were not authorized to speak publicly about the problem. This conflict ultimately led to the cancellation of the game.
After the acquisition of Leyou by Tencent, the Seattle-based Amazon spokesman said they were unable to provide the right environment for the game to continue.
“We love the Lord of the Rings franchise and are disappointed that we won’t be able to introduce the game to users,” he added.
As for the employees who worked on this MMORPG, they will all be transferred to other projects, including New World.
