Marvel Rivals development director Thaddeus Sasser shared his opinion on the reasons for the failure of Sony’s shooter Concord, which was closed just a few days after its release. In an interview with the portal videogamer.com he said that the key problem of the game was the lack of a unique value that could interest the audience against the background of competitors.
As Sasser explained, in today’s environment, players are not ready to switch from already familiar projects, such as Overwatch, unless the new game offers something truly new. “If I’m already invested in Overwatch, I have 15 skins for Pharah, then I’m not just going anywhere.” – he noted. The developer also said that other factors influence success: community support, high-quality gameplay and the ability of developers to attract the attention of the audience at the development stage. Without these components, projects like Concord lose players almost instantly.
Despite this, Sasser added that success cannot be guaranteed, even if all conditions are met. The industry often springs surprises, he said, when expected hits fail and projects with lower expectations suddenly become popular.
One way or another, the developers have proven that their approach works. Today, Marvel Rivals attracts hundreds of thousands of players at a time, and in the future the interest will be maintained by regular updates with new heroes, cards and improvements. With such a fast start, the game seems to be just beginning to reach its potential.
