The former Grinding Gear Games Director and the key developer Path of Exile, Chris Wilson, announced the creation of a new game studio called Light Pattern. He reported this during interview With Diablo II designer David Brevik, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the cult Arpg from Blizzard.
According to Wilson, he left the post of director Grinding Gear Games at the end of 2023, having completed a 17-year path in the studio, which was founded in 2006. Formally, his name disappeared from GGG registration documents only in February 2025. The last shares in the studio, which has been owned by Tencent since 2018, Wilson and his colleagues sold in March 2024.
After leaving GGG, Wilson took a year break: he traveled a lot, “disassembled Magic cards”, etc. However, he soon again wanted to engage in creativity, but not in the role of the head of a large company.
“I spent a year doing this after GGG, and it relaxed, but I had a desire to engage in creativity again. And I wanted to engage in creativity in such a way that this was not connected with the post of general director of the company with a staff of 200 people.
I realized that Path of Exile got the most pleasure when Jonathan and Eric and I worked in the garage. ”
This was the reason for the creation of Light Pattern studio – a small team from friends and like -minded people. There are no details about the first game yet, but Wilson himself gave a transparent hint: the studio announcement date, which coincided with the anniversary of Diablo II, was not chosen by chance. Also on the studio’s website there is a vacancy of the art director, which among the requirements is “a deep understanding of Diablo II-not only as a player, but also as a person who is versed in its artistic and systemic heritage.”
Given all this, it is easy to guess in which direction the new Wilson project will move. But the developers promise to reveal the details not soon.
