The head of Invoke Studios, Dominic Guay, explained why the team chose the warlock as the main character Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. According to the developer, “the creative use of magic” forms the basis of the gameplay and story of the upcoming single-player action game based on the tabletop role-playing game universe.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at gamescom 2026, Guay said that the team spent a lot of time discussing which Dungeons & Dragons class to make central to the game. From a character and story perspective, the developers quickly came to the conclusion that Warlock fits best.
We knew we wanted to write a character, write a story, and that kind of forced us to pick a class and explore it further. We started with the idea of creating a character who used magic because creative spellcasting was at the core of what we wanted to do in the gameplay. That’s how we came to the warlocks.
The game director added that the team found this class particularly interesting from a storytelling perspective. The main character of the game, Kaatri, is in a pact with a powerful being, an ancient witch named Tasha, who acts as her patron.
It’s about a character who decides to go up to an incredibly powerful being and say, “Hey, give me some power,” and convince him to do it. So we wondered what kind of character would even be capable of doing this. This led us to the warlock.
For those familiar with tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, it’s no secret that the system offers players dozens of classes and a huge number of spells to choose from. Judging by the gameplay trailer, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons promises to generously show spectacular magic, however, as Guay admitted, building a balanced system of spells was not so easy.
Magic, especially when it comes to Dungeons & Dragons, can do anything. So we had to choose spells and determine what to focus on. We wanted the player to be able to be creative, but we also knew that it would be impossible to do absolutely everything.
Managing the volume of the magic system became a real challenge.
Guay also noted that despite the difficulties, working on the project brings pleasure to the team.
I’ve been playing open world games for quite some time, and I was interested in working with the idea of a character who casts spells in a variety of different ways.
When asked about possible future games dedicated to other D&D classes, the game director admitted that fans are already interested in such a prospect.
Ever since we’ve been working on this game, people have been asking us if we’ll do something about another class,” Guay said with a laugh. – Let’s start with this one, and then we’ll see what opportunities appear in the future. But for us, the warlock turned out to be a really cool class choice.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will be released in 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
