Persona series producer Kazuhisa Wada reiteratedthat remakes of the first two parts of the franchise are likely to take place in the future. According to him, preserving old games in an accessible form for new generations of players is a kind of professional duty of the developer.
The topic of preserving video games has been particularly pressing lately. Sony has announced that it will no longer release discs for new PlayStation games starting in 2028, causing concern among the community. The problem of availability of older titles has existed before, because the older the game, the more difficult it is to find a working copy and a way to run it, but the refusal of physical media on one of the industry’s key platforms adds cause for concern.
Against this background, Atlus’s position looks encouraging. In an interview, Wada, who is working as a producer on Persona 4 Revivalspoke about the logic that the studio followed when working on “Persona 3 Reload” in 2023.
When we initially conceived Persona 3 Reload, we already knew what we wanted to do and Persona 4 Revival. We had to put this idea aside for later, but we thought about it in parallel.
Wada went on to explain his view on the nature of remakes and remasters in general:
For me, a remaster or remake is a kind of cultural preservation of heritage. As a creator, it’s your responsibility to take what you’ve done before and make sure it doesn’t get lost and is still available today. By that same logic, Persona 1 and Persona 2 are something we’ll probably do sooner or later too.
This is not the first time Wada has raised the topic of possible remakes of the first parts of the series. In another recent interview he already said:
I can’t say for sure, but personally I think it’s definitely worth doing. I think we have to do this.
Considering his views on the importance of preserving games, the insistence of such statements seems quite logical, and it is unlikely that fans of the series will be against it.
Atlus currently has a busy schedule: the studio is busy with the release Persona 4 Revivaland there is still development ahead Persona 6. Nevertheless, Wada’s words give reason to hope that the fate of the remaining parts of the series is in good hands.
