In December last year, it became known that the sandbox MMORPG Fractured Online would be distributed by gamigo. Portal MMO13.ru contacted the developers to ask a few questions about future plans and the possible impact of the publisher on the game. Questions were answered by Jacopo Galelli, co-founder and CEO of Dynamight Studios.
Hello. Tell us why you decided to work with gamigo?
Cooperation with the publisher allows us to expand the team twice. The publisher also offers expertise in community, marketing, support, and so on. We at Dynamight Studios want to focus on developing our games rather than using our resources to promote. Gamigo was the first publisher to contact us in November 2017 and they have a lot of experience in MMORPG distribution. From the very beginning, we had good contact with Gamigo on a human level, which is also important.
How will having a publisher affect development?
Dynamight still controls the vision and design of Fractured Online. We have partnered with gamigo to help us publish the game and make it a success. As mentioned, their participation will help us expand our team as well as the scope of Fractured Online.
Will developers have complete creative freedom?
Dynamight retains sole ownership of the Fractured Online design and nothing will change in that regard.
Since Gamigo is now a publisher, does this mean that Fractured will be distributed through the Glyph app?
Yes, Fractured Online will also be available through Glyph through a partnership with gamigo.
Before the official announcement, you kept the intrigue for a long time by releasing special teasers – a kind of audio diary telling the story of one woman. Should we expect similar lore-revealing materials in the future?
Yes, you can expect similar and even more content as we move forward and reveal more stories from the world of Fracture Online.
TOWhen an MMO has a publisher, many people become wary of adding Pay-to-Win elements. Should I wait in the in-game store for items that affect the balance?
As we said, Dynamight still controls the development of Fractured Online, including its monetization. As previously stated, we do not intend to add pay-to-win items to the Fractured Online item shop.
Fractured was originally scheduled for release in 2021, but the game is still in alpha. Why is development taking so long?
We want Fractured Online to launch with enough features and content to offer hundreds of hours of gameplay. I don’t want the game to end up without endgame content at launch. We are taking advantage of the extra development time for Fractured Online and doing regular playtests to show players our progress.
How has the game changed since the first alpha?
Since the first alpha, we have added a lot of mechanics and a lot of content. For example, at the very beginning, you could only fight and build a simple house. The alpha version of Fracture Online was just a proof of concept. The tech tree, sieges, crime system, bosses and PvP were all added later. In the upcoming testing phases, we will have a lot more content compared to the first Alpha.
What else do you want to change before release?
At this time, we have no plans to change any of the core design principles of Fractured Online. We want to playtest and get as much player feedback as possible to keep our content interesting and meaningful.
A couple of years ago you said that the game would be translated into Russian. I hope the plans haven’t changed.
We are now planning to first translate Fractured Online into French and German. Together with gamigo, we will evaluate the potential for adding languages based on the needs and interests of the community.
What are you going to add in post-release updates? Maybe new regions, weapons and enemies?
We have a lot of long-term plans for Fractured Online, and we’re still figuring out what’s coming after launch. There are many options: long-term goals, crafting, gathering and more, but nothing has been confirmed yet, as over the next year we will get more information about what players want. Now the main focus is on giving players the best game at the start.
Recently, SpatialOS technology has not been very popular. What do you think it is and why are you still using it?
We expect many popular games to be released on SpatialOS this year and beyond, including Fractured Online. We work closely with Improbable and are pleased with the development of the platform and their support. We look forward to even more improvements in the future.
What kind of players do you think Fractured is suitable for?
Fractured Online is perfect for players who enjoy sandbox MMOs, isometric games, or games with an old-school vibe wrapped in modern packaging. From exploration, character creation, party play, competitive PvP and more, we’re sure there’s something for every MMO player.
