The developers of the game Across the Wonderlands, formerly known as To the Star, talked about how the project has changed since its inception. In the summer of 2023, they took inspiration from the classics The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll to create a unique survival simulator. The original concept involved traveling around planets and philosophical reflections on the nature of intelligent beings. The main goal was to reach the star that fell on the home planet, which was supposed to be the culmination of the adventure.
The name To the Star was chosen for its brevity and memorability, but already at the logo development stage it became clear that it did not reflect the spirit of the game. Experimenting with a visual style inspired by Don’t Starve and Tim Burton’s Alice resulted in promotional art featuring purple hues of the night sky and the hero looking up at a lonely mountain. However, this image seemed too serious to the developers and did not fit the atmosphere of the game, in which the hero could, for example, eat too many cupcakes with cotton candy and slugs.
Over time, the developers have significantly redesigned many elements. The focus was on interaction with surrounding objects, accelerated crafting of unusual items, and integration of the progress system with construction in a personal dimension. As a result, the developers decided to change the name to Across the Wonderlands to better fit the new direction of the game, where the main thing is the journey itself, and not the final goal.
