PlayStation 5 is still hard to find on sale, but we continue to tell you about games adapted for the next generation. For the future, so to speak, so that you know what to expect from the updated versions if you are going to purchase this console. In this review, we’ll talk about the sports simulator Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, which was released in September 2020 and recently made it to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Briefly about the game
Let’s start with general information about the game for those who suddenly have not heard anything about it. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a collection of remasters of the first two parts of the series, which were released in 1999 and 2000, respectively. The developers have kept in the games everything that fans love them for, wrapping the familiar gameplay in a beautiful candy wrapper. Although there were tricks that were added in later parts. The game features both classic single player modes and competitive multiplayer modes along with a leaderboard. The remaster received positive reviews from users and critics, in contrast to the previous re-release, which came out in 2012.
Upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version
It is worth writing separately about the upgrade to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 for PlayStation 5, since everything is not so simple here. Activision would not have been the same company if it hadn’t tried to earn a little extra money at the port. The fact is that only owners of the Deluxe Edition, which includes additional cosmetic items, can update for free. If you have the standard edition, you will have to pay extra for the upgrade. The prices are as follows:
- Tony Hawk’s ™ Pro Skater ™ 1 + 2 (PS4) – 2649 rubles
- Tony Hawk’s ™ Pro Skater ™ 1 + 2 – ‘Two generations’ Deluxe (PS4 and PS5) – 3249 rubles
- Tony Hawk’s ™ Pro Skater ™ 1 + 2 – upgrade ‘Two generations’ Deluxe (PS4) – 600 rubles.
Graphics and performance
When buying an upgrade for money, you want to get a noticeable leap in graphics, right? How did Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 transform on PlayStation 5? To be honest, practically nothing. Visually, the game looks pretty much the same. There are quite a few reflective surfaces and puddles in the remaster, so just adding ray tracing would make the picture much more beautiful.
As for the graphics modes, there are two of them, and they differ only in resolution and frame rate:
- Graphics mode: 4K, 60 FPS.
- Performance mode: 1080p, 120 FPS.
Of course, this is not a competitive shooter that requires a higher frame rate to play comfortably. However, if your monitor or TV is 1080p and supports 120 Hz, then you can select a Performance Mode for an even smoother picture. If you have a 4K screen, then it is better to give preference to the resolution.
Features of the Dualsence gamepad
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 has tried the least with adapting the features of the Dualsence gamepad. The only thing they added was a little resistance on the right trigger and a little tactile feedback when using Revert.
One could blame everything on the fact that it is difficult for a skateboarder simulator to come up with at least something that reveals the features of Dualsence, but no. The space is just huge! You can make tactile feedback when moving on the railing, when jumping, when falling – and so that each action feels differently. You ask 600 rubles for an improvement, but you don’t even offer basic functionality!
Let’s go over the rest of the points briefly, since there is nothing special to tell. Downloads in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 are two to three times faster, although they were not that long in the PS4 version, so the difference is not so impressive. Activity maps allow you to quickly select the mode you want, but there are no built-in video guides for trophies. The game does not pause automatically when using the PS and Home buttons. The Russian language has not yet been added.
Upgrading to the PS5 version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 turned out to be very lazy, especially considering that it is not free with the purchase of the standard edition. In fact, the most important thing that was done was to increase the maximum resolution and frame rate, and the features of the Dualsence gamepad were used to a minimum.
