Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is powered by the Snowdrop engine that was used to create Tom Clancy’s The Division and Starlink: Battle for Atlas. However, due to the fact that the world of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is different, the developers had to significantly update it, making improvements to it. Technical art director Sebastian Lindoff spoke about the new features of Snowdrop in a new video.
To convey the beauty of nature on Pandora, the studio has expanded the capabilities of the engine. Players can roam the dense jungle and fly high above the ground. Developers can now display thousands of parts at the same time on one screen. Various technologies have also been added such as volumetric clouds and ray tracing.
Lead Narrative Designer Alice Rendell spoke about a new engine feature that makes the game world livelier. A special system allows NPCs to understand the state of the world and react to player behavior, weather, time of day, etc.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S.
