The developers from Invoke Studios talked about how they are going to balance between the authenticity of the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and the desire to surprise even experienced fans of the setting. Studio head Dominique Guay in an interview with TechRadar Gaming at gamescom 2026 explainedWhy Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will not turn into a simple repetition of well-known materials from the original source.
The team actively uses “deep” elements of D&D – rare monsters, specific items and spells that not every tabletop role-playing game player is familiar with. Action Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons takes place in Darkon, one of the holdings in the Realm of Dread region associated with the famous setting of Ravenloft.
Exploring the open world of Darkon and revealing its secrets will take players “tens of hours”, which confirms: Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will not become a hundred-hour campaign with endless content.
Books have been written about this. Some of the material is really highly specialized, but we took some really good material.
We don’t want to create a game where if you know D&D, you think, “Oh, I know everything here.” We want players to live through this mystery, figuring out what this place is and what rules apply there. Many players are familiar with Ravenloft, another Dread Realm, and this will give them some clues about what’s going on.
Guay noted that even players who are completely new to D&D will be able to figure things out as they go along, without having any advantage over those who know anything.
The developer also confirmed that Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Many classic tabletop role-playing game techniques will remain, from finding secret doors to dodging traps, which should make the title as true to the spirit of the original source as possible.
We do it in a way that conveys that same feeling, but in real time, without dice rolls and similar mechanics.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will be released in 2027 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
