The heroes of long-running franchises have amazingly selective memory. Leon Scott Kennedy can immediately recall the night of 1998 in Raccoon City in his head, but he doesn’t say anything at all about a month in the Spanish wilderness, where he was poisoned by a parasite, tortured and almost turned into a puppet of a cult, as if he was just dreaming about it all.

Observation surfaced after passing Resident Evil Requiemwhere Leon returns to the outskirts of the city where his career began. The logic of the claim is simple: if we consider the Tyrant’s chase through the police station to be a trauma, then rural Spain from RE4 is head and shoulders above Raccoon City in terms of nightmare level.

A village with a bell, huge mutants, residents with a parasite crawling out of their necks, and regenerators with iron maidens, which in themselves draw on a separate genre of horror.

Within the plot, the silence about Spain has a completely working explanation. Leon physically stands at the site of his first disaster, so associations are drawn there, and not to the events of seven years ago in another part of the world.

Someone noted that it would be appropriate to remember Luis Sera in a conversation about the feeling of guilt towards the dead, but judging by the hero’s behavior, he rather carefully does not remember Spain.

An interesting thought flashed through:

I love the idea that all of his missions are just as crazy as those in RE4, and he goes on them twice a week.

The franchise itself, however, has not forgotten the fourth part. In “Endless Darkness”, President Graham personally thanks Leon for saving his daughter, in “Vendetta” Los Illuminados and Las Plagas appear as part of the A-virus, which is why Chris and Rebecca are looking for Leon, and in “The Curse” the parasite that Tricell sells directly descends from the same Spanish infection.

The fate of RE6 looks much stranger, where the scale of madness overlapped all other parts, and there were almost no mentions. Zeno in Resident Evil Requiem tells Grace that the President was killed for trying to reveal the truth about Raccoon City and Elpis, the same episode comes up in her report after the finale, and Chris in “Island of Death” remembers Pierce.

Capcom is clearly not going to bury the sixth part, but no one is in a hurry to drag it into a remake: after RE5, which neatly closes the line of Umbrella, Spencer and Wesker, the story of Carla and the worldwide conspiracy theory will require not a remake, but a rewrite from scratch.
