Director Zach Cregger, who is working on the new film adaptation of Resident Evil, admitted a mistake in communicating with the audience and apologized for not meeting the expectations of some fans of the series. He spoke about this in an interview, responding to months of criticism from the fan community.

According to Cregger, he hoped that fans of the games would react to his version of the film as warmly as he did.

I was naive. I thought that fans of these games, like me, would be happy that someone would take it upon themselves to turn Resident Evil into a survival horror film.

One of the main sources of dissatisfaction is the absence in the new film of a storyline dedicated to Leon Kennedy, one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise. Many fans have been waiting for years to see his story on the big screen, and Cregger acknowledged the validity of those expectations.

I didn’t fully understand the feelings that players feel when they wait forever for Leon’s story, and I understand them. I wish I could tell this particular story. I understand this disappointment.

Cregger also explained the nature of his empathy for skeptical fans, noting that he himself had not watched previous Resident Evil adaptations because they did not fit his vision for the series.

I understand this disappointment so well because I haven’t seen the early films myself – they’re nothing like Resident Evil, which I love. How can I be angry at fans with the same attitude?

The director expressed hope that audiences will still give the film a chance, despite skepticism and disappointment. He emphasized that the film is based on real love for the source material, and not just using a recognizable brand for the sake of financing.

This isn’t a story I’m just telling with a Resident Evil title slapped on it to get a budget. This is my version of the Resident Evil story.

The situation surrounding the film adaptation reflects a long-standing problem with video game adaptations – balancing the director’s own creative vision with the expectations of a dedicated fan base. The Resident Evil franchise has already received several film adaptations before, none of which were warmly received by the gaming community, so skepticism towards Cregger’s new project did not arise out of nowhere.
