Over the past few years, MMORPG players have liked to “bury” the genre, claiming that there are no new games, no new ideas, and in general “there are only mobile phones around, where there is nothing except p2w monetization.” But time passes, everything develops, and a new milestone in the development of the legendary genre may well come in 2024. After all, even mobile and cross-platform games are taking a step forward and trying to stand out from their competitors. We tried to collect the most anticipated MMORPG games for PC, which players will get acquainted with in the coming year.
Crystal of Atlan
Crystal of Atlan from the Nuverse studio will reach a global release in 2024. The developers are positioning their game as a magipunk action MMORPG for PC and mobile platforms.
Players will become a member of the Adventurers’ Guild and explore the world of Atlan, where magic and technology coexist in everyday life. The combat system is a dynamic action game with maneuverable battles, including in the air. At release the game will have four classes with two subclasses: Swordsman, Magister, Puppeteer, Musketeer. Each of them has more than ten skills in their arsenal, which will allow you to create your own unique build.
The Chinese version of the game was released in July 2023, and the global version is expected to be released in 2024.
Perfect New World
The original MMORPG Perfect World was once in great demand among the Russian-speaking audience. And the reimagining, called Perfect New World, aroused great interest among old fans of the game. But, unfortunately or fortunately, it is difficult to call the new project a direct continuation. The developers changed the classic combat system to a console non-target one, which allows you to “capture” a target, and also implemented dodge and parry systems. Under these conditions, battles with ordinary monsters and bosses became more dynamic and demanding of the player’s skills.
The game will offer a variety of content for players of all preferences: storyline and side quests, adventures in PvE dungeons and PvP arenas, completing guild quests and fighting strong bosses.
The game is being developed by IRONCORE GAME STUDIO under license from PERFECT WORLD GAMES, which previously created the original game. The release is scheduled for 2024 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
World of Jade Dynasty
MMORPG World of Jade Dynasty has been in development for over 8 years. During this time, the project changed several game engines, transferred and conducted closed tests to receive feedback from players. But the developers are almost sure that in 2024 the game will finally be ready for release.
The game is created on Unreal Engine 5 and will be able to demonstrate excellent graphics using modern technologies. According to currently available information, players will have access to a huge seamless world, riddles in the open world, movement on ground and flying mounts, various dungeons, PvP arenas and massive battles of 200 vs 200 people.
The release is expected in 2024 in China, and to access the game you will need to purchase a subscription. There is currently no exact information about a worldwide release.
The Queenfall
Medieval MMORPG The Quinfall is one of the main “dark horses” that players will meet in 2024. The game is being developed by the independent Turkish studio Vawraek Technology, and will only be released on PC.
The developers set out to create a truly great game with a lot of mechanics and features, even which other companies are increasingly abandoning. For example, the game plans to directly transfer things between players, 10 game classes, a non-target combat system, a huge world with different biomes and monsters, world bosses, PvP in the open world and large-scale sieges, peaceful professions and crafting designed for the character’s skill. The number of “tricks” and ideas can play a cruel joke on the developers, but if successful, we can get a real hit for all connoisseurs of the MMORPG genre.
At the moment there is no information about a possible release date for the game, but before release the developers are going to conduct closed beta testing.
Tarisland
The cross-platform MMORPG Tarisland was able to attract the attention of players for various reasons: the title of “WoW mobile killer”, and statements about the absence of P2W elements, and a scandal about the presence of P2W elements. But this noise only allowed this game to gain an audience waiting for it.
Tarisland is a classic fantasy MMORPG with a storyline, side quests, dungeons, PvP arenas, resource collection and crafting. What distinguishes it from other cross-platform games is the quality with which the developers approached the implementation of the project. Graphics, game mechanics, variety of content, class balance, implementation of individual clients for different platforms – everything is done at a high level, and there are no obvious failures. Based on the results of past tests, players were most disappointed with the monetization system, although it does not look aggressive compared to other mobile and cross-platform games. And server development timegates, when in 2-3 hours you can do all the daily activities that affect character development. It’s worth noting that for busy people, gradually opening up content can be a plus.
The game will be released worldwide in 2024 on PC and mobile platforms iOS and Android.
Blue Protocol
Made in high-quality anime style, MMORPG Blue Protocol immediately attracts attention. Japanese developers from Project Sky Blue and Bandai Namco Online tried to implement a style familiar to many people around the world. And they succeeded.
In the game itself, the authors paid great attention to the PvE component of the game: a high-quality storyline, various side quests, group dungeons and battles with world bosses. The non-target combat system is responsible for the dynamics, and the artificial intelligence of the monsters will try its best to allow them to select targets and attack the most vulnerable players.
Blue Protocol was released in Japan in June 2023, but the global version, published by Amazon Games, has been pushed back to 2024. According to some players, this transfer will only benefit the game, and the developers will be able to improve the quality of the content. The game is available on PC and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Chrono Odyssey
According to the producer of MMORPG Chrono Odyssey, the development team is made up of avid gamers and aims to “continue the legacy of beloved MMORPGs that have stood the test of time.”
Chrono Odyssey takes place in the changing world of Cetera, where the front line of the war against the Void unfolds. Unexplored regions await players, fraught with both dangers and valuable rewards. The authors introduced the Chrono element (time) into the game to give the game uniqueness and new mechanics related to time manipulation. Hundreds of players will be able to participate in MMO activities that will take place in real time, and social interaction will be different from most online games.
The game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to release in the second half of 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Previously, a mobile version of the game was planned, but it was abandoned.
Bellatores
MMORPG Bellatores is being developed by the South Korean company NYOU, consisting of both veterans and young professionals and specially created for the development of this project. The total budget is estimated at 150-200 million dollars, of which more than 50 million are investments. Unreal Engine 5 was chosen as the engine, and the combat system is represented by a classic target system.
According to the developers, they carefully approached the creation of the world and filling it with content. The confrontation between houses (factions), of which 6 have been announced so far, will unfold almost anywhere in the world. The game world itself is completely open, does not contain instances and is not separated by loading screens. Players from different factions will be able to freely fight among themselves, fight for key points and participate in sieges.
There are no classes, character levels, or things tied to characteristics in the game, and skills are upgraded as you use them. You may be a heavily armored mage or a sword-wielding warrior who prefers fabric items.
The game will be released in the second half of 2024 on PC and will be aimed primarily at Western audiences. The developers stated that they would prepare an honest monetization system without any p2w elements. We hope the end result is an interesting and exciting project that will revive the genre of multi-sided factional MMORPGs.
ArcheAge 2
The original ArcheAge was a huge success around the world, but over time it lost most of its players. However, XLGAMES and Jae Kyung Song (known as Jake Song) are confident that ArcheAge 2 will repeat the success of the original and attract new players to this universe. Especially for Western audiences.
High-quality graphics using the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, a non-target combat system, a strong emphasis on individual adventures, a well-developed plot and immersion in the world of the game, trading and a host of other activities – this is just part of what the authors modestly talk about about their future game. But players were excited by reports that the game would not focus on massive PvP events, and that the developers would give preference to content for small groups. Reports of targeting Western console players also raise concerns and questions among fans of the first part.
We will be able to find out whether the game will become a worthy successor to the first part or get lost among its competitors in the second half of 2024, when the global release will take place on PCs and next-generation consoles.
Throne and Liberty
MMORPG Throne and Liberty went through a difficult development path and at release faced one problem that it will have to solve for a long time. Over the past 10 years, the South Korean company NCSOFT has focused on developing mobile and cross-platform games with an aggressive monetization model. This brought huge profits to the company, but alienated the domestic audience. The company’s management assigned the new MMOPRG to correct this situation.
Throne and Liberty is a classic MMORPG without auto combat, auto running, a mobile client and an aggressive monetization model. The developers tried to create a fantasy world without bright colors and unjustified graphic elements, which often ruin immersion in the setting. Players will plunge into a detailed open world of truly large-scale proportions. The game does not have a classic class system and offers you to choose two types of weapons, customizing the build to suit your playing style.
Storyline, side quests, various PvE and PvP events, party dungeons and open dungeons, world bosses and archbosses, clan battles for control points on the world map and the siege of a castle, gradual discovery of content, changes in weather and time of day – all this is just part of the content that was prepared over many years of development.
In South Korea, the game was released on PC on December 7, 2023, and a global release, for which Amazon Games is responsible, is planned for the first half of the year (possibly in April). At the same time, the game will appear on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
These MMORPGs are the most anticipated in 2024, but not the only ones. In addition to them, you can expect a lot of other games, including Legend of YMIR, Bitcraft, Into the Echo, Eternal Tombs, Corepunk, Pax Dei. And also global versions of Odin: Valhalla Rising, Night Crows and, possibly, Wars of Prasia.
