Downloadable as a torrent, Unity of Command II has the same baseline that made the first UoC a success. Each unit on the battlefield is made up of sections called steps, each represented by a small dot below the device model. Sometimes units have “specialized steps” of attached assets – such as a separate tank company temporarily assigned to support an infantry division. Steps are either active, full circle, or hidden, empty. When a unit attacks or defends, its active steps are multiplied by their combat value, summed up, and compared with the sum of the other unit for odds of different outcomes. The basics like combat are simple, but expect frustration through trial and error as you figure out how to remap moves, balance logistics, juggle command ranges, and upgrade your units. More detailed, frequent hints would be nice. The interface is quite good and does not affect the game design – it is definitely one of the best for this kind of game.
