GameDiscoverCo named the most purchased games on PC and consoles among those released in 2023

Consulting agency GameDiscoverCo named the best-selling games on PC (Steam) and consoles. It is worth noting that we are talking specifically about projects that first appeared on sale in 2023. Games that came out of Early Access, such as Baldur’s Gate 3, were not included in this ranking. The results are partly predictable, partly intriguing.

Unexpectedly, Sons Of The Forest, a cooperative horror game with survival elements, takes first place in terms of the number of copies sold. In second place is the representative of the most famous gaming franchise among shooters – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Interestingly, the new part of Call of Duty on Steam has only 31% positive reviews.

Another cooperative horror game, Lethal Company, unexpectedly took third place. The game was made by indie developer Zeekerss, and the game has been topping the sales charts on Steam for the past few weeks.

You can also note the success of the online shooter BattleBit Remastered (5th place), the cooperative role-playing action game Remnant II (11th place), the mecha action ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON (13th place) and the cooperative horror Demonologist (16th place) place).

If we take the ranking by income, the leaders change somewhat. Sons Of The Forest is inferior to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Hogwarts Legacy – the difference in the price of the projects affects it. There’s a catch here: Modern Warfare III was added as DLC to the main Modern Warfare game, so it’s difficult to estimate exact sales. Analysts may have slightly overestimated sales.

On consoles, the rankings for the number of copies sold are very similar, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 24, Diablo IV, Madden NFL 24 and NBA 2K24 at the top. Only on the PlayStation are the exclusives Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (4th place) and Final Fantasy XVI. It is likely that the XBOX Games Pass has become a key factor in the absence of Microsoft exclusives in the top sales on its own console.

Data for Nintendo Switch is taken from sales of digital copies in Western online stores and may differ from the global picture. But, we can assume that the first place has not changed because of this – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Link’s adventures are still in demand among fans of the series and the Switch platform.
