NCSOFT filed a lawsuit against the developers of MMORPG ROM: Remember of Majesty

NCSOFT filed a lawsuit against the South Korean studio Red Lab Games, which developed the MMORPG ROM: Remember of Majesty, and the game’s publisher, Kakao Games. The reason is plagiarism of the popular MMORPG Lineage W. It is worth noting that the lawsuits were filed in two countries at once: South Korea and Taiwan.

According to an NCSOFT representative, many elements were found copied: the game concept, content, graphical elements, user interface and character controls. The company considered such copying to be theft and plagiarism of intellectual property. Kakao Games told South Korean media that it is already considering the voiced claims against the game.

ROM: Remember of Majesty is set for release on February 27, 2024. Yesterday, the developers prematurely stopped the procedure for reserving game nicknames and selecting a server, since 18 servers had already reached the limit, although initially there were only 5 planned.

This is not the first such process for NCSOFT. Previously, the company had repeatedly filed plagiarism lawsuits against various companies. For example, in June 2021, a lawsuit was filed against Webzen and its MMORPG R2 Mobile due to similarities to Lineage 2M. And in April 2023, legal proceedings began against XLGames and Kakao Games, since borrowings from the same Lineage 2M were found in the MMORPG ArcheAge War.
