Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX: Review

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX Review The mobile version of the MMORPG Moonlight Blade was launched in South Korea - Moonlight Blade Mobile

Relevant for platform: PS5

Alex Kidd was once a mascot SEGA – and games about him came out, and comics. But when it was necessary to create a character that could compete with Mario, the boy was forgotten and more and more attention was paid to Sonic. Series Alex kidd died for several decades, and suddenly they decided to resurrect her by making a remake of the first game – Alex kidd in miracle world 1986 year. But does anyone need him in our time?

A New Look

In the version called Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, first of all, the visual side has changed. The very poor environment typical of games from the Master System console plays here with completely different colors. If you wish, you can press R2 at any time and switch between the original and the remake, as in Halo: The Master Chief Collection and the coming Diablo II: Resurrected

Flat boxes hanging in the air and lying on the ground have gained volume. The infamous little clouds have greatly increased in size, and the attacked castle is now on fire. Alex Kidd himself also became prettier, to say nothing of the bosses. However, not in all cases, the decisions of the artists are successful – in the cave, for example, the stalactites hanging from the ceiling are painted as if they are located in the background, while in fact the character beats his head against them.

The difference is huge.

Although DX falls short of modern platformers in terms of pictures, a lot of work has been done. When you switch from a remake to the original, you involuntarily laugh at how all this splendor looked in 1986 – without visual effects, with a very limited number of colors and large pixels.

Injustice after injustice

In the gameplay, the developers Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX did not change practically anything. This is the same platformer, divided into two dozen levels – you pass an obstacle course made of colorful balls, then you swim under water, then you find yourself in a castle with traps. The locations are small, and you just need to get to the finish line safe and sound in order to jump into the door leading to the next level or meet the boss.

... But it's difficult to return to it - the remake looks very nice.

The difficulty remained high, but this is only due to the fact that the game has very unpredictable physics and many dishonest situations. You never know what Alex will do after a jump: will he hit the platform exactly, will he roll off it due to idiotic inertia, will he hit the opponent due to stupid hitboxes. The controls are very “wooden”, just like in the original.

At the same time, there is nothing here that would induce you to suffer and play to the end. Except maybe the platinum trophy, which is knocked out in one evening. There is really no plot – the introductory video tells about a villain who turned all the peasants into stone statues, and then everything is very banal and predictable. Alex has almost no abilities – he just jumps, bends down (this will never come in handy) and hits with his fist.

Passing the levels, you come across bags of money and gold boxes containing the same currency. However, there is no point in collecting all this – you, of course, can buy additional “lives” and even vehicles in stores, but there is no need to waste time on this. Transport makes the levels too boring, and three “lives” are more than enough in the vast majority of episodes. When the attempts end, you are thrown back to the beginning of the level. The maps are too short to be inconvenient.

Plus, in the remake, fights with bosses seem even more ridiculous. In each such fight, it is possible to “break” the mechanics – either kill the boss before he starts doing something, or get close to him and dodge all attacks. And sometimes they are invited to play “Rock, Scissors, Paper” with them. Three attempts, a game to two wins; if you lose, try again. Opponents don’t change tactics if you fail, so you can just remember their actions. In a sense, this is a “feature” of the game, so it was left in the remake, but it doesn’t get any better.

It is surprising that such a boring performance attracted so many spectators.

When you complete the first playthrough, two modes are unlocked in the menu. The first is the opportunity to pass the Alex kidd in miracle world in high resolution and without saving. The second is alternate battles with four storyline bosses, where in the event of death (and only one attempt is given), you start everything from the very beginning. The mechanics do not change, and in the game “Rock, Paper, Scissors” you have to win before each fight. A stupid, one-time mode, which is needed only for “achievement”.

It is not entirely clear for whom it was made Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX… Fans of the original have likely lost interest in the games by now. The new audience will abandon the remake after the first level due to awkward controls and primitive location design. If you want a quality and varied platformer, there is Kaze and the wild masks and a bunch of other great entertainment. As a museum exhibit, antiques hidden under the updated picture, the game is hardly interesting to anyone and is not worth the money. But thanks for the easy “platinum” – time was not completely wasted.

Pros: improved graphics makes the game much brighter than its predecessor; lightweight platinum prize.

Minuses: the gameplay has not changed – the unpredictable physics has remained the same, as well as the annoying situations; primitive design of everything – from locations to boss fights; boring bonus entertainment.
