Development of an MMO based on the League of Legends universe has been restarted

Mark Merrill, Riot Games’ chief product officer, announced on his X (Twitter) that development of an MMO based on the League of Legends universe has been restarted. According to him, the development team will “go into the shadows” for several years to concentrate on development. So if you’ve been waiting for the game in the coming years, then feel free to move the expected release date even further.

“After much thought and discussion, we decided to change the direction of the project some time ago. This decision was not easy for us, but it was necessary. The original vision simply wasn’t different enough from what you can play today.

We don’t believe you want an MMO you’ve played before with a coat of “Runeterra” paint slapped on it. To truly realize the potential of the world of Runeterra and meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to create something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre.” — Mark Merrill, co-founder and chief product officer, Riot Games.
