Motherland is a “sad fairy tale for adults,” as its developer, under the pseudonym Avdeev, dubbed it, previously famous for the acutely social horror projects WILD RUSSIA and IDIOT. Motherland is a first-person walking simulator with horror elements that tells how a resident of the town of Zamkadsk survives during an epidemic through a semi-surreal narrative.

The protagonist is a foreign tourist who found himself far from the capital and found the beginning of the pandemic in a small provincial town. He cannot return home and is forced to stay indefinitely in a small, damp and cold rented apartment. From the lack of heat and dry air, the hero catches a cold and is forced to leave his shelter to buy medicine. And then, finally, it’s time to really feel the cultural code and local flavor in your own skin.

Outside the hero’s apartment, an open world awaits, filled with Russian melancholy, panel houses, colorful characters, absurd situations and anecdotes – everything that is sweet and close to the heart of an ordinary Russian. You can do everything that is permitted by law. The story develops non-linearly and has many options for the development of events, depending on the choice made by the hero. Everything is like in life, with one exception – the hero is pursued by mysterious creatures who demand antibodies and a code from him…
