Gray Zone is a top-down shooter that mixes roguelike elements and real-time tactics. The game takes place on a distant planet inhabited by people many years ago. The colony turned into a separate state, where the slave system flourishes and most of the population is only weak-willed workers. One of these slaves lived for many years under the yoke of his rulers, until he ran out of patience.

The hero decides to make a full-fledged uprising and encourages more and more people to do so. Now, under the guidance of a player, he needs to save people from slavery and defeat an insidious enemy. The gameplay is based on constant battles on various open levels. The player can control his soldier, and give commands to his numerous companions, who directly help in battles.

The objectives of the tasks can be very different, for example, it can be the release of prisoners, the extraction of useful information, the destruction of an important target, the protection of a certain point, or simply the capture of the enemy base. Since the enemy has more soldiers and is much better equipped with technology and weapons, the gamer must think over his sorties, and not just run directly, sacrificing partners.
